PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Josh Torres (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joao Pires (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Josh Torres!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Joao Pires!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Damien Edna and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pires throws a right and a left that Torres avoids nicely.

Torres throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Pires tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Torres is in Pires's guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Pires looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Torres is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Pires has his foot on Torres's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Torres works his way back into a safe position though.
Torres not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Torres has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Torres is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Torres has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Torres is pushing down on Pires's leg trying to pass to half guard. Pires is fighting to maintain full guard but Torres has managed to sneak the leg through.

Torres throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Pires's waist but Pires gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Torres off to one side.

Torres's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Josh Torres.

Torres feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Torres, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
