PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Mike Cope (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Peeta Mellark (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cope comes into the arena with Let's Go blaring out of the sound system. Both fighters really staring each other down here, as Peeta Mellark enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mike Cope!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 8 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Peeta Mellark!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Ryoma Takatsuka and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mellark misses with a looping left.
Mellark needs to keep his hands up - Cope had a free shot at his head there.
Cope throws a one two combo.
Cope with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Cope throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
A combination from Cope does no damage.
Mellark misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Mellark keeps Cope at a distance using the push kick.
Cope shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Mellark as he jumps to the side.
Mellark wants to clinch up but Cope keeps it at a distance.
Cope fails with the takedown.
Cope cracks Mellark with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Mellark throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Mellark checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Mellark is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Cope misses with a wild body shot.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Cope throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Mellark ducks under a wild hook from Cope.

Cope avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Mellark tries to clinch but Cope is having none of it.
Mellark blocks a jab.
A slapping leg kick lands for Mellark.
Mellark takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Peeta Mellark is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Cope throws a leg kick that is checked
and Mellark counters with a solid body kick.
Cope throws a shot from downtown. Mellark moves away and avoids it.
Mellark scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Cope keeps the fight on the outside.
Cope uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Mellark.
No luck for Cope with that takedown attempt.

Cope misses with a takedown attempt - Mellark sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Mellark throws a wild body kick that Cope sees coming a mile off.

Cope throws a chopping leg kick but Mellark manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Cope shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Mellark but Mellark pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Cope moves into range and connects with a jab.
Mellark throws a nice looking combination but Cope bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Mellark stuffs the takedown.
Mellark throws a low kick but Cope moves out of range easily.
Cope avoids the body shot from Mellark.
Cope has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Mellark.
Cope looks to throw the jab but Mellark is out of range.
Cope lands with a hook. Mellark tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Mellark throws a shot from downtown. Cope moves away and avoids it.

A looping hook to the body misses from Cope. Mellark does a little dance to reset his feet.

Mellark tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Cope manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Cope throws a head kick but Mellark moves out of range.
Cope with a hook.
Mellark uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Cope.
Mellark throws a wild body kick that Cope sees coming a mile off.
Mellark takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Cope swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Mellark tries to clinch up but Cope circles away and keeps his distance.
Cope doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Cope on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Cope looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Mellark is fending him off so far but Cope persists. Nope, Mellark circles away and we're back to standing.
No joy there for Mellark, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Cope fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Mellark has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Cope lands the left hand.

Cope thumps Mellark with a low kick.
Mellark throws a shot from downtown. Cope moves away and avoids it.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Cope lands with a straight right. Mellark didn't see that one coming.
Mellark misses with a few strikes there.
Mellark stuffs the takedown.
Mellark throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Cope motions for Mellark to come forward. Cope throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Mellark. Cope shrugs it off though.
Cope throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Mellark checks the leg kick nicely there.
Mellark throws a good cross that connects.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Mellark throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Mellark scores with a one two! Cope had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Cope fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Mellark will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Mike Cope will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Mellark misses with a left hand
and Mellark takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Mellark uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Cope.
Mike Cope seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Cope throws a jab when Mellark was well out of range.
Mellark scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Mellark misses with a body kick.
Mike Cope is winning the standup battle so far.
Cope misses with a wild combination.
Cope shoots in for a double leg but Mellark sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Cope fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Mellark avoids it really well and circles away.
Cope throws a hook to the side of Mellark's head but Mellark sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Mellark lands a leg kick that knocks Cope off balance momentarily.

Cope shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Mellark defends it nicely.

Cope is pressing down on Mellark's thigh, looking to free his foot. Mellark is holding on for now.

Mellark is controlling Cope's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Cope thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Mellark's head.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Cope loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Cope trying to control but Mellark is working from the bottom.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Mellark is on top in guard.
Cope is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Cope has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Cope working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mellark doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Mellark manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Mellark controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Mellark's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Cope lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Mellark!

Mellark is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Cope throws some wild stikes that Mellark manages to avoid easily.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Mellark is rocked!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Mellark is still in real trouble! Can Cope finish him?
Cope lands a big shot to the head and Mellark winces in pain. He's tapped out due to strikes!
