PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Melvin Maklveen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Long Pong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Long Pong is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Melvin Maklveen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Long Pong!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Robert Twigg and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maklveen doesn't manage to clinch there - Pong circles away.
Maklveen thows a body shot but no joy.
Maklveen fails with the takedown.
Maklveen shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Maklveen fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Melvin Maklveen. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Maklveen tries to clinch up.

Pong closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Maklveen to the mat! Maklveen manages to get full guard.
Pong throwing strikes from guard but Maklveen blocks nicely.
Pong wants to pass the guard but Maklveen is keeping the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pong won't allow Maklveen to sweep him here.

Maklveen has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Pong can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Maklveen pulls Pong in close to his closed guard and prevents Pong from doing any damage or advancing position.
Maklveen is trying to control the position but Pong postures up.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Maklveen misses with a straight right.

Pong closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Maklveen to the mat! Maklveen manages to get full guard.

Pong trying to control the position from guard on top but Maklveen is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pong trying to stand up but can't free himself from Maklveen's guard.
Pong must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Maklveen is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Maklveen has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Pong can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Pong throws a big right hand that misses.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Maklveen is looking to stand up but Pong isn't so interested in that idea.

Pong passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Pong has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Maklveen misses with a takedown

and Pong counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Maklveen!
Maklveen is breathing heavily.

Pong gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
Maklveen closes the distance looking to clinch

and Pong counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Pong looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

Pong seems to be working for a kimura but Maklveen defends the submission attempt.
Maklveen is trying to control but can't.
Pong wants to free his trapped foot but Maklveen is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Maklveen slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Long Pong dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Maklveen with a lazy takedown attempt
and Pong counters with a head kick. That will keep Maklveen thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!


Maklveen is rocked!
Melvin Maklveen is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Maklveen wants to clinch but Pong slips to the side
and Pong makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Maklveen really felt that one!
Oh Maklveen is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Maklveen darts in trying to clinch

and Pong holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Pong jumps guard.
Maklveen seems to have got his legs back now.
Pong trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Pong is on top in guard.
Pong throwing strikes from guard but Maklveen blocks nicely.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Maklveen working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pong doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pong manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Pong decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Maklveen, up you get!

Pong looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Pong forces Maklveen back against the cage and clinches.
Maklveen is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Pong gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Maklveen wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Maklveen takes an elbow to the forehead.

Pong escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Pong.
Maklveen throws a big shot that misses.

Pong shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Pong gets to his feet - Maklveen follows without any prompting.
Pong keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.

and Pong counters with a nice double leg into side control. Maklveen won't be happy with that.

Maklveen takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Maklveen tries to bench press Pong off him but Pong keeps the position.
Long Pong has got the better of the ground game so far.

Maklveen explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!

Maklveen closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Maklveen tries to land a knee to the head but Pong blocks with his arms.
Pong on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Pong blocking some punches.
Maklveen tries to land knees in the clinch but Pong avoids the damage to the body.
Maklveen with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Maklveen misses with a knee strike.

Pong pulls guard.
Pong trying to keep a closed guard but Maklveen is proving a slippery customer.

Maklveen drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Maklveen jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Maklveen stands and steps away. Pong gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Maklveen tries to clinch

and Pong counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Pong crunches a lovely knee into Maklveen's ribcage.
Maklveen wants to break free but Pong has control.

Pong gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Pong trying to control the position from guard on top but Maklveen is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pong would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Pong gets to his feet - Maklveen follows without any prompting.
Maklveen tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Pong decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Maklveen's guard.
Pong pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Maklveen is keeping the position for now.
Pong working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Pong stands up from Maklveen's guard - Pong perhaps looking for a knockout.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Maklveen tries to clinch but Pong moves away
and Pong makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Maklveen really felt that one!

and Pong counters with a single leg into guard. Maklveen didn't expect that.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Long Pong showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



Pong drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Maklveen looking for a guillotine here but Pong defends easily.
Maklveen thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Maklveen is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Pong has his hands clasped together but Maklveen extends an breaks Pong's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Maklveen.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:51 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Melvin Maklveen!
