PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Oji San (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Katsuro Sato (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Oji San!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Katsuro Sato!
The judges for this bout are Taro Takaoka, Sosuke Kotani and Shirou Masuda.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
San misses the jab.
San lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Sato throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Sato slips under a jab from San.
Oji San seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Sato closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Sato lands in his opponent's guard.
San looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
San manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Sato manages to get himself to full guard.
Sato has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but San has passed into side control.
Sato regains half guard.
San is trying to control the action in half guard but Sato is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Oji San.
The fighters circling - San throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

San lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

San connects with a leg kick. Sato looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.

San throws a series of punches but Sato avoids them all with ease.
Sato comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

San swings for the body but Sato moves out of range.
San thuds his right hand into Sato's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
San wants to clinch.

A looping hook to the body misses from Sato. San does a little dance to reset his feet.
San buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

Sato closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Sato throws an elbow but San slips to the side and avoids it well.
San manages to work his way to half guard, despite Sato's best efforts.

This has been an exciting period of action!

San is pulling down on Sato's head. It's preventing any offense from Sato, at least for the moment.

Sato swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

San has managed to clinch.
Sato jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as San walks away with a smile on his face. Sato gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Good leg kick by Sato there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
San uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Sato.
Sato throws a hook but San blocks it.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Sato.

San scores with a nice head shot.
Sato throws a body punch but San moves out of range.

Sato looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
San lands a jab to the nose.

Sato takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Sato misses with an uppercut. San saw that one coming.
Jab, jab by San - just one landing.

San takes the fight into the clinch.
Sato goes for a takedown in the clinch but San prevents it.
Oji San has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Katsuro Sato.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

San can't seem to implement his control oriented gameplan at the moment. That's no bad thing of course, for those of us who want to see a good fight.

Sato throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
San slips a straight right by Sato.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts San, as that shot connected.

Sato shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Sato showed some decent athleticism there.
San holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Sato misses with a head shot. San uses the momentum to regain guard.
San is trying to keep Sato in close.
San keeping moving, preventing Sato from controlling successfully.
San manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Sato manages to get himself to full guard.
Sato has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Sato has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but San can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Sato is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
San manages to get to full guard.
Sato in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
San tries to land a sweep but no joy.

San pulls Sato in close to his closed guard and prevents Sato from doing any damage or advancing position.

Sato is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! San is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! San has escaped and now he's on top!

Sato is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
San wants to control from the top but Sato keeps moving.

Oji San has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Oji San is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Oji San.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for San, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Oji San was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
