PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Oliver Leno (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andy Patterson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Oliver Leno!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Andy Patterson!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Leno fails to land the takedown.

Leno tries to sprawl but Patterson drives through with a takedown into half guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Leno tries to get to full guard but Patterson has control of the leg.

Leno looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Patterson sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Patterson wants to stand up but Leno has a hold of him and won't allow it.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Leno actively working from the bottom here.
Patterson passes to side control.
Leno tries to buck Patterson off but Patterson is having none of it.
Patterson working away.
Patterson throwing strikes but missing, from side control.

Patterson decides to stand back up. Patterson steps back and let's Leno get back to his feet.

Patterson has managed to clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Patterson missing with knees to the body.
Patterson wants to break the clinch but can't.

Patterson breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Patterson lands with a shot to the body.
Leno shoots in looking for a takedown but Patterson manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Leno's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Patterson cracks Leno with an open hand slap.

Patterson looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Leno!
Leno is breathing heavily.

Patterson is working for a guillotine from mount but Leno frees his head quite easily.
Patterson thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Leno is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Patterson thowing shots but they're missing.
Patterson really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Leno. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Leno is looking to get to half guard.

Patterson is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Leno has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Leno!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Leno trying to control the position from guard on top but Patterson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Leno throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Patterson works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Patterson is pulling down on Leno's head to control his posture.
Patterson not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Patterson looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Leno passes into half guard.

Leno is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Patterson defends it well.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Patterson actively working from the bottom here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Leno tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Patterson swivels and escapes.

Patterson has taken the fight to the clinch.
Patterson just leaning against Leno, taking a breather.
Leno is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Patterson has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Leno is trying to keep an underhook but Patterson manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Patterson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Leno keeps working.

Patterson is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Leno defends it well.
Patterson trying to control the action but Leno is working from the bottom.

Leno is trying to stand up here but Patterson is controlling him well.
Leno is pressing down on Patterson's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Leno working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Patterson.
Leno has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Patterson has passed into side control.
You can see the frustration on Leno's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Patterson is trying to get an arm triangle but Leno is defending well.
Leno is being controlled here.
Leno is trying to get back to half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Patterson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Leno keeps working.
Leno is trying to get back to half guard.
Andy Patterson has got the better of the ground game so far.
Patterson content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Patterson taking a break here but Leno is having none of it and regains half guard.

Leno regains full guard. Nicely done.

Patterson avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Patterson wants to get up but he can't break Leno's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Patterson looking to sit in guard and control but Leno gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Andy Patterson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Patterson darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Patterson content to control rather than advance.
Patterson is trying to control. Leno wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Patterson tries to stand but can't do so whilst Leno controls his leg.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Andy Patterson hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Patterson scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Andy Patterson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Patterson clinches up against the cage.
Patterson tries to stall but Leno uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Leno has Patterson pressed against the cage, preventing Patterson from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Leno is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Patterson turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Leno wants to control but Patterson postures up.
Patterson controls the position.
Patterson working the strikes but Leno uses the opportunity to regain half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Leno looks like he's trying to stand up.

Leno looking for submissions off his back.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Patterson looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Patterson thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Leno's head.
Patterson is just content to waste time from the top position. Leno takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Patterson trying to control the position from guard on top but Leno is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Patterson pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Leno is keeping the position for now.
Leno avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Patterson would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Leno manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

And that's the end of the fight!
Andy Patterson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Patterson has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
