Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Cody Stuart! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Varicella Zoster! The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Timothy Bukovac and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Stuart misses with the combination.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Zoster checks a leg kick. Stuart closes the distance and clinches up with Zoster, looking for a takedown. Stuart pushes Zoster against the cage but Zoster circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Zoster blocks a head kick by Stuart.
An inside leg kick from Stuart misses. Good shot there by Zoster. Zoster swinging wildly here.
Zoster looks to land a combination but Stuart avoids it well. Stuart darts in and clinches Zoster up against the cage. Zoster wants to get back to striking at distance but Stuart won't allow it.
Zoster is trying to break the clinch but Stuart has him pressed against the cage. Both fighters working to control the clinch. Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Stuart. Zoster manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
That's one minute gone in the round. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Zoster can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Stuart controls the pace. Stuart's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Stuart makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Zoster working for a triangle but Stuart defends it easily.
Zoster is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Stuart is aware though and is defending well. Stuart controls from within his opponent's guard. Stuart postures up and lands a big shot to Zoster's brow. Stuart controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Zoster is looking for a triangle but Stuart pushes his legs off easily.
Zoster working for submissions but it's allowed Stuart to get to half guard.
Stuart content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Zoster looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Zoster really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Stuart. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Zoster looks gassed! Still in half guard, Stuart seems content to control. Stuart scores with a couple of good hammerfists. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Stuart in particular looking to stall. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Stuart working over Zoster with some ground and pound. Zoster looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Stuart is looking for a kimura but Zoster is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Stuart to get the leverage. Stuart moves nicely into side control. A lull in the action here. Zoster is positioning himself to get back to half guard. The referee asks Stuart politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Stuart prefers to stall for the moment though. Zoster tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Stuart wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Stuart tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Stuart has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Zoster trying to remain calm as Stuart controls from the top position. Stuart is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Zoster looks calm but he's in trouble here. Stuart gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Zoster is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Stuart lets go of the hold and Zoster can pop his arm back in it's socket.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Cody Stuart! During a confident post fight interview, Cody Stuart thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
