PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Priest (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cameron Speed (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Speed is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Trivium / Shogun. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Johnny Priest!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Cameron Speed!
The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Johanna Lukiainen and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Priest bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Speed's head backwards.

Priest fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Speed, pushing him back against the ropes.
Speed tries for a takedown but Priest manages to get underhooks.
Speed goes for a takedown in the clinch but Priest prevents it.
Speed wants a takedown but no success here.
Johnny Priest has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Cameron Speed.
Priest comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
Priest keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Speed's efforts to push away.

Speed pulls guard effortlessly.

Speed is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Priest defends well.

Priest stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Priest connects with the punch.
Priest throws out a powerful jab.

Speed has Priest up against the ropes in a clinch.
Speed jumps guard but Priest turns him against the ropes and keeps the fight standing.
Priest comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
Speed is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Priest pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Priest pushes Speed back against the ropes and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Priest gets underhooks to prevent Speed's takedown attempt.
Priest is trying to maintain a safe position but Speed gets an underhook and turns Priest into the ropes.
Speed avoids the elbow strike from Priest, against the ropes.
Speed can't get the takedown.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Priest.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Speed is trying to drag Priest to the mat but Priest just about manages to keep his footing. He used the ropes to his advantage there.
Speed is pushing Priest up against the ropes, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Speed is looking to take this one to the mat.
Priest lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.

Speed has Priest pressed up against the ropes. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Speed pulls back from the ropes and twists to the side, sending Priest tumbling to the mat - Speed dives into Priest's guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Speed accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Priest wants to sweep here but Speed controlling him for the moment.
Speed wants to pass the guard but Priest is keeping the position.
Speed looking to sit in guard and control but Priest gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Priest trying to control but Speed is working from the bottom.

Speed is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Priest trying to control the position from guard on top but Speed is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Speed looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Priest preventing the sweep.

Speed working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Priest doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Priest manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Speed looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Speed keeping moving, preventing Priest from controlling successfully.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Johnny Priest will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Speed moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Speed looks for a takedown but Priest sprawls well.

Speed drives through and clinches with Priest against the ropes.
Speed on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Priest lands a damaging elbow.
A left hand lands to the body for Priest.

Speed breaks the clinch.
Priest cracks Speed with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Priest lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Priest is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

Priest tries to land knees in the clinch but Speed avoids the damage to the body.
Speed tries to stall but Priest uses the opportunity to gain a better position.

Speed pulls guard.

Speed has his foot on Priest's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Priest works his way back into a safe position though.
Priest slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Speed looking to control.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Speed isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Priest stacks Speed on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Priest!

Priest stands up.
Priest connects with a jab.

Speed throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Priest lands a body shot.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Priest forces Speed back against the ropes and clinches.
Speed avoids a wild elbow strike from Priest.
Priest creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Priest lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Speed backwards.

Speed tries for a takedown. No joy.
Priest lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Priest lands an elbow just above Speed 's eye.

Speed is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Priest is aware though and is defending well.

Priest tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Speed is holding on to half guard well.
Priest is looking to take a break and control but Speed is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Speed tries to roll over but Priest keeps him under control.
Priest wants to control but Speed is keeping him busy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Speed drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Priest manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Speed has Priest in his guard.
Speed wants to get back to his feet but Priest is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Speed looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Speed has an active guard here but Priest has managed to pass into half guard.

Priest tries to stand but can't do so whilst Speed controls his leg.
The fighters are battling for position here. Speed manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Speed is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Priest defends well.

Speed looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Priest has picked Speed up and slammed him! Speed can't keep hold of the triangle and Priest manages to pass to side control!

Priest decides to stand back up.
Priest throws a head kick that Speed semi-blocks.
Priest takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
This has been an exciting period of action!
Speed throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Priest's waist but Priest gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Speed off to one side.
Speed takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Speed takes the fight into the clinch.
Speed blocks the elbow strike.

Speed pulls Priest into guard.
Speed is looking to sweep but instead, Priest has passed into half guard.

Speed looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Speed is not content to let Priest control the position.

Priest is thwarting Speed's attempts to control the position.
Speed is trying to stand back up but Priest is controlling him
Priest is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Priest wants to control but Speed is keeping him busy.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Johnny Priest just wasn't active enough.

Speed rushes Priest and pushes him back against the ropes in a clinch.

Priest prevents the takedown attempt.

Speed is trying to pull guard but Priest has him pressed against the ropes.

Priest manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Speed has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Priest is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Priest has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

I would just about give that final round to Cameron Speed.
