PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Derek Patterson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Clay Squida (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Squida's choice of entrance music: Sleep Now in the Fire- Rage Against the Machine. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Derek Patterson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Clay Squida!
The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Johanna Lukiainen and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A jab from Patterson finds it's way through Squida's defenses.
Squida misses with a lunging right hand
and Patterson counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Patterson throws a nice looking combination but Squida bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Patterson lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Patterson throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Squida fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Patterson.
Patterson fails to land the takedown.
A bone on bone clash there as Patterson blocks the leg kick.
Patterson scores with a body shot.
Patterson tries to close the distance and clinch up but Squida swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Squida takes a swing at Patterson's ribcage but misses.
Squida lands with an overhand left.
Squida throws a combination that misses
and Patterson connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Patterson fails with an attempt to clinch.
A combination from Patterson does no damage.
Squida rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Patterson counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Patterson tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

and Squida counters with a shoot takedown. Patterson fights it but they end up in guard.


Patterson is rocked!
Squida sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Oh Patterson is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

That's one minute gone in the round.
Squida really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Patterson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Squida landing some decent shots from guard.
Patterson seems to have got his legs back now.

Patterson looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Squida must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Patterson is breathing heavily.
Patterson wants to sweep but no luck.
Patterson will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Squida postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Squida accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Squida controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Patterson escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Squida gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Squida missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Squida trying to control but Patterson is working from the bottom.
Squida pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Patterson is keeping the position for now.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Patterson can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Squida controls the pace.

Patterson had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Squida is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Patterson Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Squida's back instead.
Squida trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.

Despite being in the dominant position, Clay Squida just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

and Patterson counters with a one-two to the body.
Patterson tries to clinch

and Squida counters with a shoot takedown. Patterson fights it but they end up in guard.

Squida avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Patterson has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Squida can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Patterson is trying to stick to Squida's back but Squida is turning into Patterson. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Patterson's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Squida.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Patterson is looking for a triangle but Squida pushes his legs off easily.
Patterson not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Patterson has his foot on Squida's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Squida works his way back into a safe position though.

Squida loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Patterson has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Squida can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Squida connects with a couple of short punches.
Squida not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Patterson manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Patterson has control of Squida's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Squida regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Patterson with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Derek Patterson dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Patterson shoots and misses

and Squida moves into the clinch.
Patterson tries to break the clinch but Squida is controlling the position.

Squida escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Squida closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Patterson to the mat! Patterson manages to get full guard.

Patterson is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!
Patterson manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Squida manages to get himself to full guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Patterson is working for a kimura but Squida is defending it quite comfortably.
Squida is trying to escape back to his feet but Patterson uses the scramble to pass into side control.

Patterson trying to control the position but Squida is working away.

Patterson is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Squida has escaped the position, nice work there.
Patterson wants to control but Squida is keeping him busy.
Squida is looking to reverse the position.

Patterson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Squida is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Squida tries to get back to half guard but can't.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Patterson looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Squida is looking for a sweep.

Patterson is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Squida looks calm but he's in trouble here. Patterson gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Squida is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Patterson lets go of the hold and Squida can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:37 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Derek Patterson!
