Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
18 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Frank Mir! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
12 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Shane Webcke! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Robert Twigg and George Francis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mir slips a straight right by Webcke. Mir has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Webcke finds it's way round the side to connect with Mir's head. Webcke lands a jab to the head.
Mir looks to land a combination but Webcke avoids it well. Webcke misses with a looping left. Mir tries for a takedown but Webcke circles away easily and Webcke counters with a lovely straight right hand! Mir ducks under a wild hook from Webcke. Mir defending well as Webcke loads up on a big left hand. Jab from Webcke. Mir tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Mir looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Mir slips under a jab. A punch combination from Webcke misses. Webcke uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook. This has been an exciting period of action! Mir gets a clinch. Mir manages to break the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Some wild striking there from Webcke.
Mir tries to close the distance and clinch but Webcke swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Webcke tries to bum rush Mir with a series of wild strikes but Mir uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Mir fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Webcke avoids it really well and circles away. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Frank Mir. That's going to take a lot out of him. A telegraphed right hand from Webcke misses the target. Mir will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Mir fails to land with a series of punches.
Mir manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Webcke on his heels. He'll look to pass Webcke's guard now, I'm sure. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Webcke looking to hit a scissor sweep but Mir is one step ahead there. Mir trying to control but Webcke is working from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mir looking to pass the guard. Mir trying to control the position from guard on top but Webcke is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Frank Mir wasn't doing enough on the ground. A left lands for Webcke. Mir gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Mir takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Mir scores with a head kick. Webcke tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.
It looks like Shane Webcke has been cut.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nice cross by Webcke. Webcke waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Mir. Shane Webcke seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Mir slips a jab from Webcke. Mir checks the leg kick. Webcke misses with a looping right. Nice defenses there by Mir. Webcke looks to score with a jab to the body but Mir is just out of range. Webcke closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Mir did well to prevent Webcke getting side control. Mir is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Webcke missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Mir wants to control but Webcke is keeping busy and won't allow it. Webcke is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Webcke throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Mir kicks off Webcke and gets to his feet. Mir blocks a jab. Webcke misses with a hook
and Mir holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch. Mir gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mir accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Mir in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Mir trying to control the position from guard on top but Webcke is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Mir missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Mir trying to control the position from guard on top but Webcke is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Frank Mir will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Shane Webcke's cut. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Mir shoots in but Webcke avoids the takedown attempt easily. Mir keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Mir fails in his attempt to clinch. Mir lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh. Webcke thows a left - swing and a miss! Frank Mir is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Mir doesn't manage to clinch there - Webcke circles away.
A combination from Mir does no damage. A lazy left from Webcke finds it's target. Mir moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross. Webcke throws a hook but Mir avoids it easily. Webcke tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Mir was well out of range. Poor timing from Webcke. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Mir is defended easily by Webcke. Webcke displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Mir. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Frank Mir. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mir lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range. Mir gets the takedown into side control. Mir stands up and beckons Webcke to his feet. Webcke looks to land a left hand but Mir moved out of range nicely. Mir avoids a lazy jab quite easily. Crunch! Mir slams his shin into Webcke's torso. Webcke shoots in looking for a takedown. Mir tries to sprawl out of it but Webcke keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Mir manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. A momentary lapse in concentration from Mir enables Webcke to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Mir manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. This has been an exciting period of action! Webcke throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Mir works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Webcke postures up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Webcke is posturing up here but Mir has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Webcke tries to roll out but it's too tight and Webcke has to tap! Slick submission there by Mir!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:19 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Frank Mir! Frank Mir was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
