PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between John Cortez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mark Mincer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mincer is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: worlds greatest. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Cortez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mark Mincer!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Wesley Smith and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cortez tries a head kick but it misses.
Nice sprawl there from Cortez as Mincer shoots in.
Mincer displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Cortez.
Cortez takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Mincer misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Cortez is trying hard to land a takedown here. Mincer sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Cortez shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Mincer defends it nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Cortez. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Mincer gets caught napping as Cortez dives in and scores a takedown. Mincer manages to retain guard.
Mincer wants to stand but Cortez is controlling the position.

Mincer pushes Cortez off looking to stand but Cortez dives back in and keeps control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mincer moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Cortez slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Cortez has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of John Cortez.
Mincer connects with a solid leg kick.
Mincer lands with a slapping head kick.

Cortez closes the distance and pushes Mincer back into the cage.

Mincer stands and steps away. Cortez gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Cortez misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
That kick from Mincer tenderised Cortez's leg. Cortez is trying to keep his angry face on.
Mincer throws a mid kick that lands with a slap.

Mincer tries a head kick but it misses.
Mincer is looking to slow Cortez down with leg kicks.
Mincer misses with a head kick.
Cortez dives in and grabs Mincer's left leg, looking for a takedown. Mincer pushes down on Cortez's head and hops out.
A thudding body kick lands there by Mincer!

Mincer throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Mincer moves out of range as Cortez throws a body kick.
Mincer connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Mark Mincer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Cortez fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Cortez moves into the clinch successfully.
Mincer has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Mincer pulls guard successfully.
Mincer striking off his back but it's not causing Cortez any problems.

Cortez postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Cortez trying to control the position from guard on top but Mincer is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Cortez working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Mincer's head.

Mincer pushes Cortez off and gets back to his feet.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Mincer throws a low kick but it's checked well by Cortez.
Cortez misses with an uppercut.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Cortez tries for a takedown but Mincer sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Mincer pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Cortez back to the cage. Mincer follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Mincer connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Mincer scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Mincer takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.

Mincer wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Mincer bucks up and tries to throw Cortez off but instead Cortez has got his back!
Cortez is looking to finish with some ground and pound!
Mincer tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

Mincer tries to buck Cortez off but Cortez takes his back!

You know, I was talking to some of our celebrities at ringside tonight and they were split right down the middle on who was going to win this fight.
Cortez has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Mincer takes a big shot to the side of the head.
Mincer controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Cortez is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Mincer defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

Cortez has his opponent trapped and is landing shots. Not a good position for Mincer.

Cortez really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Mincer.
Mincer staying busy and making it hard for Cortez to control.
John Cortez overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Cortez is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Mincer is defending well though. Cortez let's go of the attempt for now.

Cortez chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Mincer can pounce on him.

Mincer throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.

Cortez throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Mincer tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Cortez is in Mincer's guard.
Mincer wants to get back to his feet but Cortez is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Mincer tries to sprawl but Cortez drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Cortez frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Cortez trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Cortez lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mincer is flailing around like a fish out of water, trying to land strikes.
Cortez has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Mincer's face.
Mincer is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Cortez jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Mincer is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Mincer and Cortez has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Mincer is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Cortez asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Cortez decides to stand back up. Cortez steps back and let's Mincer get back to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to John Cortez.
I think Cortez has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
