The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Leandro Rodrigues and Paulo Santos.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Thorsen throws out a loose jab but Staal uses good head movement to avoid it.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Gundar Thorsen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Staal fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Thorsen has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Thorsen throws the left hand but Staal avoids the punch easily.
Staal dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Thorsen. That did some damage!

Staal is looking to take a break and control but Thorsen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Thorsen is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

John Staal dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Staal here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Thorsen comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

Thorsen darts in and lands a big hook, right on the button! Staal's legs crumble underneath him as he falls to the canvas! The ref tackles Thorsen before he gets to land any more shots to his stricken foe.
