Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Phil Davis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Phil Davis has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Phil Davis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Paul Smith!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Jeff Smith and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith throws a sloppy head kick and Davis moves out of range easily.
Davis fails with the takedown.
Davis avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
A combination from Davis does no damage.
Smith moves into range and lands a nice body kick.

Smith looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Davis trying to control but Smith postures up.
Smith trying to control from half guard but Davis is working away.

Smith is looking for a kimura here.

Smith is trying to control. Davis wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Davis has his foot on Smith's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Smith works his way back into a safe position though.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Paul Smith has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Smith drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Smith tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Smith has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Davis wants to control but Smith postures up.
Smith works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

Smith wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Davis, who protects the arm well.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Smith thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Smith wants to control but Davis is keeping him busy.

Davis is looking to regain half guard here but Smith keeps moving and retains side control.
Smith wants to lay and pray for a moment but Davis keeps working.
Davis tries to bench press Smith off him but Smith keeps the position.

Davis throws Smith to one side and escapes!
Davis takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.

Davis gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Smith tries to free his leg and advance position but Davis is retaining full guard.

Smith is looking to stand up but Davis won't let him.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Smith wants to control from the top but Davis keeps moving.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Paul Smith hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Davis closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Smith did well to prevent Davis getting side control.
Smith wants to control but Davis is keeping busy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Davis gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Smith to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Davis gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Davis fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Davis closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Smith is fighting off a takedown attempt but Davis is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Smith to the mat. Smith regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Smith is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Davis is working Smith over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Smith looking for a guillotine here but Davis defends easily.
Smith keeping moving, preventing Davis from controlling successfully.
Davis keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Smith's head.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Davis's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Davis loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Smith has a closed guard, preventing Davis from standing up.
Davis postures up in Smith's guard and throws a big left but Smith blocks it.

Smith pushes Davis off and scrambles back to his feet.

Smith shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Smith seems to be working for a kimura but Davis defends the submission attempt.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Paul Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!



Davis decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Smith is trying to stand.

Davis is trying to work for a kimura but Smith is defending well.
Davis is nestled in close to Smith, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Davis winds up and cracks Smith with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Smith has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Davis is working away from the top position though.
Smith is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Davis is staying active.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Davis missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Smith tries to roll over but Davis keeps him under control.

Davis is working for a submission of some sort.

Davis has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Smith defend it? Davis steps over the head and cranks it - Smith is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Davis!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:38 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Phil Davis!
