Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Chris Griffin! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Joko Diaz! The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, William Gold and Phil Schofield.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Diaz dives in and scores a takedown into Griffin's guard. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. Griffin is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Diaz is aware though and is defending well. Griffin looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Diaz trying to control the position from guard on top but Griffin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Diaz cracks Griffin with a solid left hand. Diaz sitting in guard here, content to control. Diaz distracts Griffin with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Diaz working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Diaz makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Diaz stands up over Griffin, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Diaz is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Griffin tries to land a sweep but no joy. Diaz cracks Griffin with a solid left hand. Diaz pushing down on Griffin's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Diaz is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
That's one minute gone in the round. The fighters are battling for position here. Griffin manages to regain full guard. Nice work. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Diaz trying to control the position from guard on top but Griffin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Griffin will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Griffin looking to hit a scissor sweep but Diaz is one step ahead there. Diaz wants to control from the top but Griffin keeps moving. Diaz is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Griffin is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Griffin has escaped and now he's on top! Diaz trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Griffin won't allow Diaz to sweep him here. Griffin really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Diaz is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Diaz moves into full mount! Griffin won't be happy about that! Diaz is giving the impression that he's looking to ground and pound but he switches suddenly into a beautiful far side armbar! Griffin is forced to tap! Great finish!
