Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ukkonen Vasara! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Nelson Gonsalvez! The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Arvi Lind and Tarja Halkonen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Vasara darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Vasara is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Vasara is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard. Vasara tries to free his leg and advance position but Gonsalvez is retaining full guard. Gonsalvez avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Vasara trying to control but Gonsalvez is working from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Vasara controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Gonsalvez wants to get back to his feet but Vasara is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Vasara is looking to work some ground and pound but Gonsalvez has wrist control.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Gonsalvez will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Vasara closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Gonsalvez to the mat! Gonsalvez manages to get full guard. Vasara stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gonsalvez swivels though and keeps the full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Vasara is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Gonsalvez is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Gonsalvez has escaped and now he's on top! Vasara is trying to control the position but Gonsalvez postures up. Vasara had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Gonsalvez is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Vasara Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Gonsalvez's back instead.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Vasara working for a choke but Gonsalvez reverses nicely into Vasara 's guard. Vasara is breathing heavily. Gonsalvez would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. Gonsalvez is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Vasara looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Gonsalvez has picked Vasara up and slammed him! Vasara can't keep hold of the triangle and Gonsalvez manages to pass to side control!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Vasara regains half guard. Vasara controlling the position for now. Gonsalvez tries to stand and escape but Vasara is controlling the position. Vasara is looking for a sweep. Gonsalvez is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Vasara wants to control but Gonsalvez is keeping busy.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Vasara wants to control the action here but instead Gonsalvez manages to pass to full mount! Vasara can't escape the position.
Vasara tries to hold on but Gonsalvez pushes him away. Vasara is trying desperately to improve position. Vasara is working hard here to advance position.
That's six minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Vasara tries to hold on but Gonsalvez pushes him away. Vasara tries to reverse the position but Gonsalvez maintains control. Vasara tries to lock up and control but Gonsalvez gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Vasara working to try and regain half guard.
Gonsalvez trying to control but Vasara is having none of it. Gonsalvez is looking to stand but Gonsalvez has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Vasara is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Vasara tries to improve his position but instead Gonsalvez has taken his back! Gonsalvez avoiding Vasara 's attempts to control his hands. Gonsalvez is hanging on to Vasara's back as he tries to escape.
Vasara tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
That's eight minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Vasara keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Vasara wants to control but Gonsalvez is having none of it. Vasara is looking to improve his position but Gonsalvez isn't that keen on the idea. Vasara wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Gonsalvez keeps control of the position as Vasara tries to break free.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Vasara trying to control the position but Gonsalvez manages to sink in the hooks. Vasara is in bad spot here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Ukkonen Vasara dominated that round. That's time! Back to the action!
Gonsalvez shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Vasara counters with a shoot takedown. Gonsalvez fights it but they end up in guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Gonsalvez keeping moving, preventing Vasara from controlling successfully. Vasara drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Gonsalvez manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Vasara has Gonsalvez in his guard. Vasara throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gonsalvez prevents Vasara from improving his position. Gonsalvez is keen to just control but Vasara is a slippery customer. Vasara tries to roll over but Gonsalvez keeps him under control. Vasara has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gonsalvez is working away from the top position though. Gonsalvez tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Vasara.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Vasara manages to get to full guard.
Gonsalvez must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Vasara is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Vasara manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Gonsalvez manages to get himself to full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Vasara missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Vasara has gone for a leg lock! Gonsalvez slips out almost immediately though and dives into Vasara's guard. Vasara is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Vasara moves into full guard.
Vasara working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Gonsalvez doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gonsalvez manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Vasara pushes a forearm under Gonsalvez's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Gonsalvez is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
