PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Sub Zero (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Daniel Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Sub Zero!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 23 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Daniel Maia!
The judges for this bout are , Timothy Bukovac and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Zero lands with a cross.
Zero throws a leg kick but Maia sees it coming and moves out of range.
Sub Zero seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Maia moves in looking to clinch but Zero pushes him off.
Zero shoots in looking for a takedown. Maia tries to sprawl out of it but Zero keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Maia manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Zero tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Maia manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Zero slips a jab from Maia.
Zero jabs Maia to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Zero lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Maia uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Zero.
Nice takedown defense from Zero. No joy for Maia on that attempt.
Zero throws a series of punches but Maia moves out of range.
A punch combination from Zero misses.

Maia gets caught flat footed, as Zero shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Zero won't allow Maia to sweep him here.
Zero tries to free his leg and advance position but Maia is retaining full guard.

Zero missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Maia seems keen to control Zero's posture.
Maia is trying to control the position from the bottom.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Daniel Maia hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Zero does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Maia lands a nice looking body shot.
Zero feints and then cracks Maia's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Maia down.
Maia connects with a body shot that sends Zero's belly button to the back.
Maia falls off balance throwing a combination
and Zero counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Maia shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
Nice sprawl there from Zero as Maia shoots in.
Sub Zero has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Daniel Maia.
Maia keeps the fight on the outside.
Zero throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Maia sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Zero misses with a body shot.
Maia shoots in and drives through. Zero sprawls well.
Maia checks a leg kick.
Nice body punch from Maia.
Maia lands with an overhand left.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Zero clinches with his opponent.
Zero throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Zero holding his opponent close, against the cage.
Zero lands an elbow just above Maia 's eye.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Maia takes a knee right on the jaw!
Maia tries to pull guard but Zero won't allow it.

Maia breaks from the clinch.
Zero tries to work over Maia's front leg with a kick but Maia checks it.
Zero tries to clinch but Maia moves out of range.
Zero shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Maia but Maia pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Good standup being displayed there by Maia as he connects with a hook.
Zero connects with a solid leg kick.

Zero gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Zero is trying to control the position but Maia postures up.
Zero is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Maia's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Maia wants to control from the top but Zero keeps moving.

Zero looking for subs off his back but Maia has passed one foot through into half guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Zero actively working from the bottom here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Zero moves into full guard.
Zero is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sub Zero dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Zero is looking to clinch.
A good leg kick by Zero.
Maia swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Zero.
Maia throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Maia misses with a body shot.
Zero scores with a leg kick.
Zero ducks under a wild hook from Maia.
A nice inside leg kick there by Zero. That's going to slow Maia down.
Maia misses with an uppercut.
Zero's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Maia connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Zero scrambles back to his feet.
Maia scores with a body shot.
Maia swats away the attempt to clinch by Zero.
Zero tries to close the distance and clinch but Maia swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Zero tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Maia paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Maia stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.

Zero rushes Maia and presses him up against the cage.
Maia has Zero pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Zero manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Maia pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Zero moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Maia misses the shot to the body.
Maia keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Zero.
Zero with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Maia to score with a decent uppercut.
A low kick from Zero misses
and Maia connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Zero throws a leg kick
and Maia counters with a stiff right hand.
Maia moves out of range of the leg kick from Zero.
Zero lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Maia throws a one two combo.
Sub Zero is winning the standup battle so far.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Zero lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Maia ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Zero moves away.

Maia takes the fight into the clinch.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Zero throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Maia blocks it with crossed arms.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Zero misses with a body punch.

Maia breaks the clinch.
Zero will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Maia fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Zero manages to avoid it.
Maia lands a nice shot that snaps Zero's head back.
The fight stays on the outside here - Zero looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Zero throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Zero motions for Maia to come forward. Zero throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Zero tries for a takedown but Maia sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Zero misses with a wild body shot.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Maia.
Zero throws the left hand but Maia avoids the punch easily.

Maia shoots in and drives through. Zero sprawls well.
Sub Zero has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Daniel Maia.
Zero jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Zero tries to clinch but Maia moves out of range.
A shot to the body from Maia misses
and Zero counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Maia's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.
Zero tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Maia counters with a nice uppercut.
Maia misses with an uppercut. Zero saw that one coming.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Zero shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Zero was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Maia is wriggling around trying to escape.
Maia is in a horrible position here. Zero smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Maia is desperately trying to improve his position but Zero has a good base and remains in mount.

Zero is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Maia has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Maia!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Zero looking to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sub Zero dominated that second round.
That's time! Zero's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Maia checks a leg kick nicely.
Zero shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Maia sprawls well. Maia wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Zero gets slowly back to his feet.
A shot to the liver by Maia. Beautiful body shot.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Zero.
Maia misses with an uppercut. Zero saw that one coming.
Zero tried to score with a low kick but Maia checks it.
Zero fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sub Zero. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Zero misses with a head kick.
Maia connects with the punch.

Maia dives in and scores a takedown into Zero's guard.

Maia postures up in Zero's guard and throws a big left but Zero blocks it.
Maia wants to control from the top but Zero keeps moving.
Zero working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Maia.
Zero looking for a sweep. Not yet Zero, not yet.

Maia avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Zero working for submissions but it's allowed Maia to get to half guard.
Zero wants to get back to full guard.
Daniel Maia has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Maia tries to pass to full mount but Zero defends it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Zero looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Sub Zero overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Maia is thwarting Zero's attempts to control the position.
Maia perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Maia is trying to work for a kimura but Zero is defending well.

Zero holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Maia controlling the action here.
Zero is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Zero looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Maia content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Sub Zero is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Zero wants to get back to full guard but Maia has passed into side control.
Maia is looking to take a break and control but Zero is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Zero can't do much from the bottom here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Zero is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Maia is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Zero gets back to half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Daniel Maia comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Zero has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A very excited looking Sub Zero rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
