5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rui Salsep! The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Matheus Silva and Felipe Paraventi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Salsep tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Cruz paws at him with a jab and circles away. Cruz swats away the attempt to clinch by Salsep. Cruz avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Cruz gets tackled into the cage by Salsep. Salsep maintains the clinch. Salsep wants a takedown.
Cruz is trying to pull guard but Salsep turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch. Cruz jumps guard but Salsep turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing. Salsep can't get the takedown.
Cruz really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Salsep is working for takedown but Cruz is calmly controlling the position for now. Felipe Cruz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rui Salsep. Salsep is landing with some decent strikes but Cruz is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue. Salsep looking to control and managing it successfully. Salsep pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. Cruz is squirming around, avoiding Salsep's attempts to control the action. Salsep lands a heavy elbow. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Cruz wants to control but Salsep is having none of it.

Cruz tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Salsep paws at him with a jab and circles away. Cruz keeps the fight on the outside. Cruz tries to close the distance and clinch but Salsep swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Cruz tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Salsep counters with a single leg into guard. Cruz didn't expect that. Salsep works over Cruz with some ground and pound from guard. Cruz keeping full guard, as Salsep tries to pass. Salsep stands and throws Cruz's legs to the side, diving into side control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cruz is not content to let Salsep control the position. Salsep tries for a kimura but Cruz is defending well. Salsep landing strikes. Salsep has knee on belly and moves into mount. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Salsep cracks Cruz with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Salsep takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Salsep lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Salsep landing strikes from the mount. Salsep with the ground and pound from mount. Salsep looking to control but Cruz is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Salsep controlling the pace for now.

Rui Salsep showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The cut man is working on Rui Salsep's cut. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Cruz tries to clinch up and Salsep decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Cruz's guard. Salsep controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Salsep trying to control the position from guard on top but Cruz is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Salsep controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Salsep makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Salsep passes easily into side control. Nice work. Salsep looks up at the clock and then as Cruz takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Salsep smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
That's one minute gone in the round. Salsep goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Cruz rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Salsep's guard! Nice work there by Cruz! Salsep kicks Cruz off and gets to his feet. Salsep gets a takedown into half guard. Salsep lands with a punch from half guard. Salsep trying to mount his opponent but Cruz defends it. Salsep trying to control the action but Cruz is working from the bottom. Salsep is stalling here. Cruz is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Salsep seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Cruz has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Salsep wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done! Cruz is looking to take a break and control but Salsep is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Salsep is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Cruz asserts his dominance and retains side control. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Salsep can do anything to dispel that myth. Salsep throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done! Cruz fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Salsep, pushing him back against the cage. Cruz is trying to break the clinch but Salsep has him pressed against the cage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Salsep prevents a body shot from Cruz. Salsep can't get the takedown.
Cruz stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
Cruz is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath. Salsep gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground. Salsep makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Salsep trying to control but Cruz is working from the bottom. Salsep passes into half guard. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Salsep is looking to advance position but Cruz won't allow it. Felipe Cruz has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Rui Salsep is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight. Salsep working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

In favor of your winner, by unanimous decision... Rui Salsep! A determined Rui Salsep didn't want to dwell on this fight in his post fight interview. Instead he was more keen to state he wants a title shot. Let's see if he gets it!
