PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Delroy Holmes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kid Coke (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Delroy Holmes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kid Coke!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Jonathan Paton and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Coke shoots in but Holmes avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Coke misses with the combination.
Holmes lands with a thumping leg kick.

Coke scores a takedown into full mount!
Coke looking to control but Holmes is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Coke looking to secure an arm triangle but Holmes defends it well.

Coke wants to finish this one by submission but Holmes is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Coke.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Coke is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Holmes to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Holmes shrugs it off.

Coke moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Holmes has worked his arm free - good work by Holmes!

Coke swings around for an armbar but Holmes sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Coke's guard.
Coke is pulling down on Holmes's head. It's preventing any offense from Holmes, at least for the moment.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Coke looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Coke keeping moving, preventing Holmes from controlling successfully.
Coke pulls Holmes in close to prevent any damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Coke throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Coke pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Holmes back to the cage. Coke follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Coke misses with a two punch combination.
Holmes uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Coke.
Holmes with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Coke to score with a decent uppercut.
Holmes on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Coke looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Holmes is fending him off so far but Coke persists. Nope, Holmes circles away and we're back to standing.
Holmes avoids the body shot from Coke.
Coke throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Holmes's waist but Holmes gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Coke off to one side.
Delroy Holmes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kid Coke.
Coke changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Holmes tries to avoid it but Coke manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Holmes to the ground. Holmes escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Holmes pulls out of a head kick attempt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Coke fails to land with a series of punches.
Coke throws a looping overhand right but Holmes ducks down to avoid it.
A big left from Coke misses.
Coke fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Holmes manages to avoid it.
Good leg kick by Holmes there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Coke will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Holmes goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Holmes wants to clinch up but Coke keeps it at a distance.
No joy there for Holmes, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Holmes slips a jab and a cross from Coke.
Sloppy strikes from Holmes. Those never looked like landing.
Kid Coke seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Holmes avoids a punch combination nicely.
Coke dives in and grabs Holmes's left leg, looking for a takedown. Holmes pushes down on Coke's head and hops out.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kid Coke dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Coke lands a jab to Holmes's midsection.
Coke misses with a straight right.
Holmes throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Holmes tries to close the distance and clinch up but Coke swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Coke shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Holmes eats them both and turns towards Coke to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Nice straight punches there by Coke. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Coke.

Holmes pushes Coke up against the cage in a clinch.
Coke is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Holmes is defending well.

Holmes escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Delroy Holmes is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Coke looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Coke is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Holmes is just riding it out for now. Coke eventually gives up the hold.
Holmes is looking for a sweep. Coke is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Holmes wants to sweep but Coke has passed to side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Coke working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Coke tries to move to full mount but Holmes actually manages to regain half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Holmes wants to get back to full guard.

Coke is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Holmes sees it coming and defends easily.
Coke not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Coke is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Coke wants to work for an arm triangle but Holmes is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Coke is looking to stall here but Holmes recovers full guard.
Coke postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Coke stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Holmes swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Coke drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Coke jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Coke trying to control but Holmes is working from the bottom.
Holmes knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Coke on the ground.

Coke drops back looking for a leg! Holmes is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Holmes manages to kick Coke off! Coke jumps back into Holmes's guard.
Coke wants to control from the top but Holmes keeps moving.
Coke pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Holmes is keeping the position for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kid Coke showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Holmes keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Holmes tries to close the distance and clinch up but Coke swats him away and circles back towards the center.
A jab from Coke does it's job there.
Coke swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Coke will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Coke misses with a wild combination.
Coke misses with a few strikes there.
The fighters circle momentarily. Coke darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Coke closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Coke looks to land a combination but Holmes avoids it well.
Coke looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Kid Coke seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Coke misses with a jab, cross combination.
Coke misses with a low kick.
Holmes throws a leg kick but Coke sees it coming and moves out of range.
Holmes feints and then cracks Coke's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Coke down.
Coke scores with a three punch combo!
Holmes throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Holmes.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Coke checks a leg kick.

Holmes throws a head kick but Coke moves out of range.
Coke misses with a wild body shot.
Holmes swings away with a leg kick that misses.

Delroy Holmes has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Coke jabs Holmes right on the nose. Holmes blinks but takes it well.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Coke throws the left hand but Holmes avoids the punch easily.

Coke throws a series of punches but Holmes avoids them all with ease.

Coke shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Holmes pinned against the cage. Holmes gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Holmes leaves Coke with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Coke swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Holmes is looking to clinch but Coke is avoiding it.
Coke misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Delroy Holmes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kid Coke.

Holmes feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Coke's calf.
Coke takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Nice sprawl there from Holmes as Coke shoots in.
Holmes takes a shot to the body in his stride.

Coke feints a jab promting Holmes to slip. Coke then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Holmes slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Kid Coke is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Coke looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Holmes is fending him off so far but Coke persists. Nope, Holmes circles away and we're back to standing.
Holmes is looking to chop away at Coke's legs.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Holmes pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Coke with a nice cross.
Coke misses with a double jab.
Coke has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Holmes.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Delroy Holmes.
I think Coke has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
