PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Matt Serra (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steve Reeves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Reeves has chosen Motley Crye - Kickstart My Heart as his entrance music. Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Matt Serra!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 1, fighting out of New York, Steve Reeves!
The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Chad Campbell and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Serra is looking to clinch.
Reeves stuffs the takedown attempt from Serra. Serra gets slowly back to his feet.

Reeves closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Serra is trying to get back to half guard.
Serra could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Reeves is looking to take a break and control but Serra is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Reeves postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Serra is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Reeves prevents Serra from standing back up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Reeves wants to free his trapped foot but Serra is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Serra wants to get back to his feet.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Serra stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Reeves.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Reeves clinches up with Serra and pushes him back against the cage.

Reeves pulls Serra into guard.
Reeves wants to control the position but Serra says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Reeves flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Serra lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Reeves is trying to get back to full guard.
Reeves trying to control but Serra postures up.
Reeves works his way to full guard. Good work.
Reeves pulls Serra in close to prevent any damage.
Serra cracks Reeves with a solid left hand.

Reeves looking to control.
Serra tries to free his leg and advance position but Reeves is retaining full guard.

Reeves had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Serra is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Reeves Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Serra's back instead.
Reeves lands strikes to the head.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Reeves missing with strikes.
Serra turns into Reeves and is now in his guard.
Serra in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Serra with a flurry of punches that miss.
Serra trying to control but Reeves is working from the bottom.
Serra stands and throws Reeves's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Reeves is not content to let Serra control the position.
Reeves manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Reeves wants to take a breather but Serra is having none of it.
Serra avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Reeves.
Reeves stalling away here and it's allowed Serra to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Reeves wants to control from the top but Serra keeps moving.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Reeves missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Serra has momentary wrist control but Reeves slips an elbow through the middle.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Reeves accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Reeves gets a takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Reeves looks gassed!
Reeves trying to pass the guard but Serra defending well.

Serra is defending against the submission attempts here by Reeves.
Reeves is just content to waste time from the top position. Serra takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Serra scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Serra shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Reeves counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Serra's guard now.
Serra looking to hit a scissor sweep but Reeves is one step ahead there.
Reeves loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Serra avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Reeves wants to pass the guard but Serra is keeping the position.

Serra utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Reeves wants to clinch but Serra slips to the side
and Serra counters with a three punch combo that has Reeves backing up. Reeves nods at Serra to acknowledge the strikes.
The fight stays on the outside here - Serra looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Reeves gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Reeves breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Serra keeps the fight on the outside.
Steve Reeves seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Reeves tries to clinch up.
Serra tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Reeves swivels and escapes.

Reeves drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Reeves is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Reeves tries to advance to mount but can't.
Serra is looking to regain half guard here but Reeves keeps moving and retains side control.

Reeves is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Serra has escaped the position, nice work there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steve Reeves showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


A head kick from Serra lands but Reeves takes it in his stride.

and Reeves decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Serra's guard.
Reeves wants to control from the top but Serra keeps moving.
Reeves stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Serra swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Reeves drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Serra dives on top into guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Reeves throws some sloppy strikes off his back.

Reeves looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Reeves escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Serra gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Serra wants to control from the top but Reeves keeps moving.

Reeves is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Reeves is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Serra is looking to stand up but Reeves won't let him.
Reeves throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Reeves misses with a double jab

and Serra counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Serra avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Reeves has his foot on Serra's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Serra works his way back into a safe position though.

Reeves gets the takedown into side control.
Serra takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Reeves has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Serra!
Serra keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Serra is desperately trying to improve his position but Reeves has a good base and remains in mount.

Reeves goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Serra turns into him and now he's in Reeves's guard.
Serra tries to stand but Reeves is controlling from the bottom.

I've got Reeves winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
