PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Stoney Mahoney (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matheus Nunes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mahoney comes to the cage accompanied by Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matheus Nunes!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Matheus Silva and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mahoney fails with an attempt to clinch.

Nunes rushes Mahoney and presses him up against the cage.

Nunes jumps guard.
Nunes working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Mahoney.
Nunes keeping moving, preventing Mahoney from controlling successfully.
Mahoney trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Stoney Mahoney just wasn't active enough.
No luck for Mahoney with that takedown attempt.
Matheus Nunes is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Nunes moves into the clinch.
Mahoney stalling in the clinch.

Nunes has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Mahoney regains guard immediately.
Mahoney is adopting a defensive guard.
Nunes trying to stand up but can't free himself from Mahoney's guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Nunes closes the distance and clinches.

Mahoney misses with a short punch on the inside.

Mahoney breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Nunes takes the fight into the clinch.

Nunes has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Mahoney is trying to keep an underhook but Nunes manages to get the takedown into half guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Mahoney fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Nunes to the ground. Mahoney is now in Nunes's guard.
Mahoney wants to control from the top but Nunes keeps moving.

Mahoney postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Nunes is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Mahoney, into his guard.
Nunes really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mahoney. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Mahoney throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Nunes is fighting to break Mahoney's control of his arms but Mahoney is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

We're going to have a standup here because Stoney Mahoney wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Nunes closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.

Mahoney ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Mahoney no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Nunes is looking to stand up but Mahoney won't let him.

Nunes stands up from Mahoney's guard - Nunes perhaps looking for a knockout.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Matheus Nunes will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!



Nunes closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Nunes successfully pulls guard.

Mahoney gets to his feet. Nunes looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Nunes darts in and clinches Mahoney up against the cage.
Nunes has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Nunes drags the fight down to the ground.
Nunes can't keep his opponent in guard - Mahoney advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Nunes is refusing to be controlled, as Mahoney sits in half guard.
Nunes is trying to stand back up but Mahoney is controlling him

Mahoney is looking for a kimura but Nunes is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Mahoney to get the leverage.
Mahoney working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Nunes's thigh. Nunes counters though and makes it back to full guard.
Mahoney could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nunes wants to stand up but Mahoney is controlling him.

Mahoney stands and steps away. Nunes gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Stoney Mahoney is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Nunes has managed to clinch.
Mahoney drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Nunes gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Nunes is working Mahoney over against the cage.
Nunes working hard to break the clinch.

Nunes gets control of Mahoney's arms and successfully pulls guard. Nunes will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Nunes wants to stand but Mahoney is controlling the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Nunes is breathing heavily.

Mahoney is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Stoney Mahoney wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Mahoney shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Nunes's guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mahoney accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Mahoney throws a strike but Nunes rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Mahoney is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Nunes is controlling him.

Mahoney has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Nunes can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Mahoney has his foot on Nunes's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Nunes works his way back into a safe position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Stoney Mahoney dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!



Nunes rushes Mahoney and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Nunes has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Mahoney is trying to keep an underhook but Nunes manages to get the takedown into half guard.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Mahoney drops down looking for an ankle pick but Nunes pulls his leg out and moves away.

Nunes has Mahoney up against the cage in a clinch.
Mahoney has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Nunes is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Nunes lands with a left to the head.

Nunes ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Nunes no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Mahoney drops back, looking for a kneebar! Nunes looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Nunes looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Nunes!
Nunes tries to get to his feet but Mahoney is in the middle of advancing position himself and ends up with Nunes in his guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mahoney trying to keep a closed guard but Nunes is proving a slippery customer.
Nunes would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mahoney pulls Nunes in close to prevent any damage.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Stoney Mahoney just wasn't active enough.

Nunes forces Mahoney back against the cage and clinches.

Nunes is trying to trip Mahoney. He has hold of a leg but Mahoney is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Nunes persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Mahoney is on top in guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mahoney is in close to Nunes's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Mahoney with a flurry of punches that miss.
Mahoney tries to free his leg and advance position but Nunes is retaining full guard.
Nunes takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Mahoney throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Mahoney drops back looking for a leg! Nunes is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Nunes manages to kick Mahoney off! Mahoney jumps back into Nunes's guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Matheus Nunes comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Nunes has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
