PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Giorgio Valentino (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Aaron Gardner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gardner has chosen Stavesacre - Minuteman as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 1, fighting out of New York, Giorgio Valentino!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Aaron Gardner!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Columbo Gatti and Dean Styles.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gardner looks to land a combination but Valentino avoids it well.
A low kick from Gardner is predictable there
and Valentino makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
A nice combination there by Valentino.


It looks like Aaron Gardner has been cut.
Valentino misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Gardner.
Gardner misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Valentino lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Gardner throws a nice looking combination but Valentino bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Valentino uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Gardner has time to react.

Gardner shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Valentino takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Valentino sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Gardner content to control rather than advance.

Valentino really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Aaron Gardner wasn't active enough on the ground.
Valentino scores with a jab. Gardner acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Valentino circles away from the clinch attempt.
Gardner keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Gardner lands with a straight right. Valentino didn't see that one coming.
Valentino connects with a high kick.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Valentino enables Gardner to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Valentino manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Gardner postures up and lands a big shot to Valentino's brow.
Gardner is stalling in the full guard.
Valentino wants to control the position but Gardner says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Gardner has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Gardner is nestled in close to Valentino, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Gardner thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Gardner wants to lay and pray for a moment but Valentino keeps working.
Gardner missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Gardner is just content to waste time from the top position. Valentino takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Gardner shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Gardner seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Valentino does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Valentino avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Gardner.
Valentino is looking for a sweep. Gardner is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Gardner seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Gardner is keen to just control but Valentino is a slippery customer.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Valentino is trying to control but can't.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Aaron Gardner.
Valentino ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Gardner moves away.

Valentino misses with a jab, cross combination.
Valentino pulls out of a head kick attempt.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Valentino checks a leg kick.
Valentino tries to score with a low kick but Gardner moves his leg out of the way.
Gardner fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Aaron Gardner is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Valentino scores with a nice right hand.

A head kick misses from Valentino.
Valentino is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
Gardner misses with an uppercut. Valentino saw that one coming.
Gardner misses with a wild combination.
Valentino moves away from the strike by Gardner.
Gardner lands a nice shot to the body.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Valentino throws a right hand that Gardner ducks under and follows up with a left that Gardner also avoids with ease.

A telegraphed right hand from Gardner misses the target.
Valentino thuds a left hand into Gardner's body.
Valentino dodges the punch combination from Gardner.
The fighters circle momentarily. Valentino darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Valentino is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.

Gardner drives through with a takedown into guard.

Valentino is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Gardner looking to sit in guard and control but Valentino gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Gardner looking to hit a scissor sweep but Valentino is one step ahead there.
Gardner wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Gardner can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Valentino controls the pace.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Giorgio Valentino will probably get the nod.

Gardner tries to clinch up but Valentino circles away and keeps his distance.
Giorgio Valentino is winning the standup battle so far.
Gardner will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Gardner throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Valentino's waist but Valentino gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gardner off to one side.
Giorgio Valentino seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Valentino dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
A punch combination from Gardner misses.
Gardner swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Valentino counters with a nice low kick that buckles Gardner's knee momentarily.
The fighters circling - Gardner throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Horrible takedown by Gardner or perhaps it was just good defense by Valentino which made him look bad.
Valentino avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Valentino lands a nice shot to the body.

Gardner throws a jab when Valentino was well out of range.

Gardner shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Gardner takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Valentino is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Valentino on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Valentino tries to get out of the position.
Gardner throws some wild stikes that Valentino manages to avoid easily.

Valentino is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Gardner throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.
Gardner sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

Gardner throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.
Gardner tries to control but Valentino wriggling away.
Valentino is looking to get to half guard.
Gardner thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Gardner trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Valentino avoids a strike by Gardner and manages to complete a very nice reversal in the process, to end up in Gardner's guard! Fantastic escape!
Gardner throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Gardner is controlling Valentino's posture.
Valentino has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Gardner not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Valentino will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Aaron Gardner.

Gardner closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Valentino did well to prevent Gardner getting side control.
Valentino is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

I think Gardner has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
