PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Cassio Venas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Leo Wallin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Venas comes to the cage accompanied by Darude - Sandstorm (Wanderlei Silva Entrance Theme). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Cassio Venas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Leo Wallin!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Kenichi Hosakawa and Yukihiro Shimada.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wallin shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Venas manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Wallin with a flurry of punches that miss.
Wallin tries to free his leg and advance position but Venas is retaining full guard.
Wallin prevents Venas from getting back to his feet.
Wallin sitting in guard here, content to control.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Leo Wallin hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Venas lands a jab to the nose.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Venas falls off balance throwing a combination
and Wallin counters with a nice body kick.

Wallin gets the takedown into side control.
Wallin wants to lay and pray for a moment but Venas keeps working.
Wallin fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Wallin laying and praying for a moment but Venas takes advantage and regains half guard.
Wallin is trying to control. Venas wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Wallin thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Venas's head.
Wallin not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Wallin wants to control but Venas is keeping him busy.
Wallin is looking to stall here but Venas recovers full guard.
Wallin wants to control from the top but Venas keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Leo Wallin was stalling too much, according to the referee.
A head kick by Venas misses
and Wallin counters with a big head kick but Venas shrugs it off.
Wallin moves in looking to clinch but Venas pushes him off.
A combination from Wallin does no damage.

Wallin scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Venas is breathing heavily.
Wallin is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Venas will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Wallin working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Wallin throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Wallin wants to lay and pray for a moment but Venas keeps working.

Wallin postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Wallin decides to stand back up. Wallin steps back and let's Venas get back to his feet.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
A head kick by Venas misses

and Wallin counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Wallin postures up in Venas's guard and throws a big left but Venas blocks it.
Wallin in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Wallin postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Wallin throwing strikes but missing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Leo Wallin dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Wallin has managed to clinch.

Wallin escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Wallin throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Venas tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Wallin is in Venas's guard.
Wallin looking to sit in guard and control but Venas gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Wallin looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Venas lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Venas is looking to stand up but Wallin won't let him.
Venas is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Wallin is working an open guard so Venas takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

A head kick by Venas misses
and Wallin counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Wallin gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Wallin gets control of Venas's arms and successfully pulls guard. Wallin will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Venas is looking to stand up but Wallin won't let him.
Venas won't allow Wallin to sweep him here.
Wallin should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Venas has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Wallin is proving hard to escape from.

Wallin manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Cassio Venas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Wallin fakes the leg kick and cracks Venas in the body.

Wallin dives in and scores a takedown into Venas's guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Wallin looking to pass the guard.

Wallin wants to control from the top but Venas keeps moving.
Wallin won't allow Venas to get back to his feet.

Leo Wallin has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Venas throws a lazy head kick
and Wallin counters with a nice kick to the body.

Wallin clinches up against the cage.
Venas is trying to break the clinch but Wallin is controlling him.

Wallin's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Wallin drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Wallin trying to control but Venas is working from the bottom.
Wallin is looking to work some ground and pound but Venas has wrist control.

Wallin drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Wallin jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Wallin looking to sit in guard and control but Venas gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Venas trying to control the position from guard on top but Wallin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Venas won't allow Wallin to sweep him here.
Wallin can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Venas controls the pace.
Venas working some strikes from top position.
Venas won't allow Wallin to get back to his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Venas stands up from guard. Let's bang!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Venas misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Venas throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Wallin.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Leo Wallin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Venas throws a lazy uppercut
and Wallin counters with a stiff right hand.
Wallin throws a nice outside leg kick.

Wallin closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Venas did well to prevent Wallin getting side control.

Wallin stands up and beckons Venas to join him on the feet.
Wallin fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Wallin tries to clinch up but Venas circles away and keeps his distance.
Venas throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Wallin lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Venas takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Wallin fails in his attempt to clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Venas takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Venas paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

Wallin moves into the clinch.

Wallin successfully pulls guard.

Wallin looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Wallin wants to stand but Venas is controlling the position.
Venas trying to control the position from guard on top but Wallin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Venas decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Wallin uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Venas.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Venas throws a right and a left that Wallin avoids nicely.

Venas gets caught napping as Wallin dives in and scores a takedown. Venas manages to retain guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Wallin looking to sit in guard and control but Venas gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Venas wanted to stand there but Wallin had control of the position.
Venas being controlled here momentarily.
Venas postures up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Venas wants to stand but Wallin is controlling his posture from full guard.
Venas chips away with some ground and pound.

Venas decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Cassio Venas is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Venas tries a head kick but it misses.

Wallin manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Venas on his heels. He'll look to pass Venas's guard now, I'm sure.
Wallin sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Venas's guard.
Wallin uses his free foot to push down on Venas's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Venas.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Wallin misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Venas holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Wallin tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Wallin tries to control but Venas wriggling away.
Wallin throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.

And that's the end of the fight!
Leo Wallin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Wallin has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
