PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Takanori Son (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gabriel Wolcat (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Takanori Son!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Gabriel Wolcat!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Shigeki Sano and Yuuki Gou.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wolcat misses with a two punch combination.
Wolcat looks for a takedown but Son sprawls well.
Son shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Wolcat as he avoids it easily.
Son misses with an attempted mid kick.
Son wants to clinch up but Wolcat keeps it at a distance.
Wolcat moves away from the strike by Son.
Wolcat doesn't manage to clinch there - Son circles away.
Wolcat throws a series of punches but Son moves out of range.
Son defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Wolcat.

Son moves into the clinch.

Wolcat manages to break the clinch.
Son tries to clinch but Wolcat is having none of it.

Wolcat instigates a clinch.
Wolcat is stalling here.

Son is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Wolcat gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Wolcat drops down looking for an ankle pick but Son pulls his leg out and moves away.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Son has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Wolcat is working away from the top position though.

Son is looking to control Wolcat's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Son avoid being mounted?
Son is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Wolcat is looking to take a break and control but Son is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Wolcat tries to clinch there but Son circles away.

Son looks for a takedown but Wolcat sprawls well.
Son is looking to clinch but Wolcat is avoiding it.
Son tries to clinch up but Wolcat circles away and keeps his distance.

Wolcat looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Son is fending him off so far but Wolcat persists. Nope, Son circles away and we're back to standing.
Wolcat fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Son avoids it really well and circles away.

Son pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Wolcat fails with an attempt to clinch.

Wolcat has taken the fight to the clinch.
Son gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Wolcat.
Wolcat looks gassed!
Wolcat prevents a body shot from Son.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Son is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Wolcat to keep the fight standing.

Wolcat fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Son, pushing him back against the cage.
Wolcat goes for a takedown attempt but Son pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Son wants to clinch up but Wolcat keeps it at a distance.
Son throws a looping overhand right but Wolcat ducks down to avoid it.
Wolcat shoots in and drives through. Son sprawls well.
Wolcat tries to close the distance and clinch but Son swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Son moves to clinch but Wolcat breaks away

and Wolcat decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Son's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Son wants to control the position but Wolcat says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Son is refusing to be controlled, as Wolcat sits in half guard.
Wolcat is looking to stall here but Son recovers full guard.
Son wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Son has his foot on Wolcat's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Wolcat works his way back into a safe position though.

Wolcat has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Son is proving hard to escape from.
Wolcat is breathing heavily.
Son has his hands on Wolcat's head, controlling the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Takanori Son.
Wolcat tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Son swivels and escapes.
Takanori Son has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Gabriel Wolcat.

Wolcat is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Son manages to pull guard.

Son working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Wolcat doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Wolcat manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Son tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Son avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Son thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Son looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Gabriel Wolcat has got the better of the ground game so far.
Son is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Son is really struggling to control Wolcat but he's trying to hold on to the position.

Wolcat drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Son manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Wolcat has Son in his guard.

Wolcat has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Son is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Wolcat.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Son slows the pace down.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Son's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. And we move into the final round!


Wolcat avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Son tries to close the distance and clinch up but Wolcat swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Wolcat has a takedown stuffed.
Wolcat explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.

Wolcat takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Horrible takedown by Wolcat or perhaps it was just good defense by Son which made him look bad.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Son is defended easily by Wolcat.

Nice uppercut lands for Son. That snapped Wolcat's head back.
The fight stays on the outside here - Son looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Wolcat shoots in looking for a takedown. Son tries to sprawl out of it but Wolcat keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Son manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Nice takedown defense from Son. No joy for Wolcat on that attempt.
Wolcat displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Son.
Son throws a sloppy head kick and Wolcat moves out of range easily.

Son dives in and grabs Wolcat's left leg, looking for a takedown. Wolcat pushes down on Son's head and hops out.

Son is trying to drag Wolcat to the mat but Wolcat just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Takanori Son showed his dominance in that final round.
