PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Davi Azevedo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Garret Sorr (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Davi Azevedo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Garret Sorr!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Thiago Cunha and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No joy there for Azevedo, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Azevedo lands with a kick to the temple. Sorr shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

Sorr closes the distance and clinches.
Azevedo tries to land knees in the clinch but Sorr avoids the damage to the body.
A knee to the head by Azevedo.

Sorr has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Azevedo regains guard immediately.
Sorr loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Sorr trying to control but Azevedo is working from the bottom.
Azevedo is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Sorr wants to stand and escape but instead Azevedo has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Sorr is pulling down on Azevedo's head. It's preventing any offense from Azevedo, at least for the moment.
Sorr looking to hit a scissor sweep but Azevedo is one step ahead there.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Sorr is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Sorr checks a low kick from Azevedo.
Azevedo throws a head kick that half lands.
Sorr avoids the head kick by Azevedo.
A nice leg kick lands there from Azevedo.
Azevedo throws a low kick but it's checked well by Sorr.

Sorr scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Sorr passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Azevedo!
Azevedo is breathing heavily.
Sorr unloads with some shots from mount but Azevedo bucks and avoids them well.

Sorr working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.

Azevedo holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Sorr tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Sorr wants to control the pace but Azevedo is squirming around nicely.
Sorr fails to advance to Azevedo's back.

A close round but Garret Sorr will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Sorr ducks under a wild hook from Azevedo.
Azevedo lands a nice leg kick that just misses Sorr's sensitive parts.
Azevedo throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Azevedo throws the kick towards the body but Sorr avoids it.
Azevedo takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Sorr blocks a head kick by Azevedo.
A big right from Azevedo misses.

Sorr drives through with a takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sorr tries to free his leg and advance position but Azevedo is retaining full guard.
Sorr postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Azevedo is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Sorr is controlling him.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Sorr works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Sorr is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Sorr wants to free his trapped foot but Azevedo is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Sorr is controlling the pace.

Sorr is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Azevedo defends it well.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Sorr trying to control the action but Azevedo is working from the bottom.

Sorr is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Azevedo doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Sorr.

Sorr is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Sorr in particular looking to stall.

Sorr decides to stand up.

Sorr scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Sorr stops Azevedo from getting back to his feet.
Sorr is looking to advance position but Azevedo won't allow it.
Azevedo is trying to stand.
Sorr wants to lay and pray for a moment but Azevedo keeps working.

Sorr postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Azevedo to stand up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Garret Sorr showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Azevedo connects with a solid leg kick.
Azevedo throws a right and a left that Sorr avoids nicely.
Azevedo throws a jab but it's blocked by Sorr.
Good leg kick by Azevedo there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Sorr will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Azevedo scores with a head kick.
Azevedo misses with a kick to the body.
Azevedo throws a leg kick which misses Sorr's front leg but catches the back leg as Sorr tries to avoid it.
Azevedo connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
The fight stays on the outside here - Sorr looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Azevedo scores with a head kick.
A slapping leg kick lands for Azevedo.
A good leg kick by Azevedo.
Azevedo is looking to slow Sorr down with leg kicks.
Sorr tries to clinch up but Azevedo circles away and keeps his distance.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Azevedo, right into the meat.
Azevedo slips a jab and a cross from Sorr.

Sorr shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Azevedo's guard.
Sorr postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Azevedo wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Sorr manages to pass to side control.
Sorr controlling the action here.

Sorr decides to stand and escape the position.

Sorr looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Azevedo!

Sorr looking to ground and pound but Azevedo is blocking nicely.
Sorr controlling from mount.
Sorr won't let Azevedo get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.

Sorr has control of Azevedo's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Azevedo regains control of the situation pretty easily.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Davi Azevedo.
I think Sorr has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
