Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mike Hugh!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Dean Smith!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Roger Salmon and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith with a poor takedown

and Hugh counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Hugh.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Hugh wants to pass the guard but Smith is keeping the position.
Hugh slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Hugh tries to free his leg and advance position but Smith is retaining full guard.

Smith is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Hugh slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

We're going to have a standup here because Mike Hugh wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Hugh scores a takedown into full mount!

Hugh controlling the position easily from mount.
Smith is desperately trying to improve his position but Hugh has a good base and remains in mount.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Smith is trying to escape the position but Hugh is controlling the position.

Smith tries to buck Hugh off but Hugh is having none of it.
You can see the frustration on Smith's face as Hugh controls the position.
Hugh lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Smith down.

Hugh decides to stand back up.

Hugh shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Mike Hugh has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Smith has his takedown stuffed

and Hugh counters with a shoot takedown. Smith fights it but they end up in guard.

Hugh turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

Hugh seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Smith for as long as he can get away with.
Smith is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Hugh off and has taken his back!

Smith is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Hugh has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.

Hugh is trying to shake Smith off. He's managed it and has hopped back to his feet! Smith won't be happy about giving up the dominant position.
Smith lands a nice hook to Hugh's body. Hugh takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

Smith dodges the punch combination from Hugh.
Dean Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smith has his takedown stuffed

and Hugh decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Smith's guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Hugh passes Smith's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Hugh's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Hugh feints and as Smith raises his hands in defense, Hugh changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Hugh's corner is telling him to maintain position.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Hugh is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Smith can do to turn this around?

The ref stands the fighters back up because Mike Hugh just wasn't active enough.
Smith swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Smith closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Hugh has picked Smith up - he's going for a ride! Hugh dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Hugh frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!



Hugh closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Smith takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Hugh has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Hugh.
Hugh remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Horrible takedown by Smith or perhaps it was just good defense by Hugh which made him look bad.

Smith shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Hugh pinned against the cage. Hugh gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Mike Hugh has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dean Smith.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Hugh, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
