Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Richard Richardson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, James Liddel! The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Jack Bonds.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Liddel uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Richardson. Richardson throws a series of punches but Liddel avoids them all with ease. Liddel misses the shot to the body. Richardson lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Liddel moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Richardson shoots in but Liddel avoids the takedown attempt easily. Richardson dodges the punch combination from Liddel.
Liddel fails in his attempt to clinch. Liddel throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Richardson sees it coming and avoids it easily. Richardson moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body. Liddel stuffs the takedown attempt from Richardson. Richardson gets slowly back to his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Liddel will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Richardson drives through and clinches with Liddel against the cage.

That's going to take a lot out of James Liddel. Richardson looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Liddel tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Richardson swivels and escapes. Richardson misses with a jab, cross combination.
Liddel decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Richardson wants to get back to full guard but Liddel has mounted him! Richardson keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Richardson avoids the strikes from Liddel. Liddel is trying to stick to Richardson's back but Richardson is turning into Liddel. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Liddel's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Richardson. Richardson is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Liddel looks for a takedown but Richardson sprawls well.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Richardson throws a hook but Liddel blocks it. Richardson misses with an uppercut. Liddel saw that one coming. Richardson will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Liddel looks for a takedown but Richardson sprawls well. Liddel has Richardson up against the cage in a clinch.

Liddel is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Richardson works on Liddel's body with a couple of short punches. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Richard Richardson will probably get the nod. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Liddel shoots in looking for a takedown. Richardson tries to sprawl out of it but Liddel keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Richardson manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Richardson misses with the combination.

Liddel tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Richardson swivels and escapes. Liddel is breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Liddel takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor. Richardson tries to clinch up. Liddel fails to land the takedown. Richard Richardson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Liddel. Richardson lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Liddel is rocked! Richardson closes the distance and clinches. Liddel tries to pull guard but Richardson holds him up against the cage and eventually Liddel drops back down to his feet.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Nice sprawl there from Richardson as Liddel shoots in.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Liddel has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him. Richardson lands a jab followed by a vicious hook that sends Liddel sprawling to the canvas. Richardson follows him down, looking for the kill. Can Liddel hang on? Liddel is still in real trouble! Can Richardson finish him? Richardson lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Richardson working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Richardson connects with a nice short shot to Liddel's temple. Liddel tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Richardson manages to move to mount!
Liddel seems to have recovered his senses. Richardson jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Liddel is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Liddel and Richardson has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Liddel is trying to stand up here but Richardson is controlling him well. Liddel avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Richardson. Richardson wants to pass to mount but Liddel is defending the position. Richardson content to control rather than advance. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Liddel slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Liddel takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Liddel clinches with his opponent.

Horrible takedown by Liddel or perhaps it was just good defense by Richardson which made him look bad. James Liddel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Richardson throws a series of punches but Liddel avoids them all with ease.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Liddel shoots for a double leg takedown but Richardson sprawls well. He's pushed Liddel's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Liddel throws a right hand that Richardson ducks under and follows up with a left that Richardson also avoids with ease. Liddel darts in and clinches Richardson up against the cage. Richardson has had enough of the clinch but Liddel keeps him there for the moment. Richardson wants to get back to striking at distance but Liddel won't allow it.

And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Richard Richardson. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Richardson, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent.
