PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Thor Thor (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Felipe Pontes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Thor comes to the cage accompanied by Thor Soundtrack. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Thor Thor!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Felipe Pontes!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Leandro Rodrigues and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thor tries to clinch up but Pontes circles away and keeps his distance.
Thor closes the distance looking to clinch
and Pontes connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Pontes throws a hook to the side of Thor's head but Thor sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Thor doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Thor tries to clinch up.
Thor ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Pontes misses with a straight left.
Pontes with a nice cross.
Thor tries to close the distance and clinch but Pontes swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Pontes gets the takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Thor is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Pontes is controlling him well.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Pontes tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Pontes has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Thor wants to get back to his feet.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Pontes works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
Pontes is looking to take a break and control but Thor is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Thor trying to remain calm as Pontes controls from the top position.
Pontes is putting a hurting on Thor here, landing some big shots from side control.
Pontes prevents Thor from escaping the position.
Thor is working to avoid the ground and pound but Pontes connects with a decent elbow.

Pontes tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Pontes wants to lay and pray for a moment but Thor keeps working.

Pontes decides to take the fight back to the feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Pontes throws a jab when Thor was well out of range.
Thor closes the distance but Pontes moves to the side

and Pontes counters with a nice double leg into side control. Thor won't be happy with that.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Pontes wants to lay and pray for a moment but Thor keeps working.
Pontes tries to move into full mount but can't pass Thor's legs.
Thor seems a little lost for a moment, as Pontes dominates the positioning.
Thor is pushing Pontes's head away, looking to escape. Pontes manages to hold on to the position though.
Pontes staying calm.
Thor tries to escape but Pontes is in control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Pontes works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
Thor is trying to buck Pontes off.

Pontes looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Thor is trying to get back to his feet.
Check out the look on Pontes's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Thor is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Pontes asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Pontes has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Pontes wants to lay and pray for a moment but Thor keeps working.

Pontes decides to stand back up. Pontes steps back and let's Thor get back to his feet.
Thor Thor seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Thor tries to close the distance and clinch but Pontes swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Thor moves to clinch but Pontes breaks away
letting Pontes counter with a right hand.
Thor tries to clinch
and Thor takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Pontes getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Pontes throws a shot to the body.
Thor wants to clinch but Pontes slips to the side
and Pontes makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Pontes misses with a double jab.
Pontes throws an overhand right that lands on Thor's shoulder, as Thor tries to avoid the shot.
Pontes throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Thor stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

That's five minutes gone in the round.
Thor looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Pontes looks to throw the jab but Thor is out of range.
Thor darts in trying to clinch
letting Pontes counter with a right hand.
Thor wants to clinch
and Pontes counters with a stiff right hand.
Thor wants to clinch
and Pontes counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Pontes connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Pontes lands a really nice looking cross but Thor seems unphased.
Pontes might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

and Pontes counters with a stiff right hand.

That's six minutes gone in the round.
Pontes swats away the attempt to clinch by Thor.
Pontes throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.

Pontes shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Pontes wants to pass to mount but Thor is defending the position.
Thor pushes Pontes off looking to stand but Pontes dives back in and keeps control.

Thor kicks off Pontes and gets to his feet.
Pontes thows a left - swing and a miss!
Pontes is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Thor had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté.
Pontes tests Thor's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Thor tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Pontes counters with a right hand to the body.

That's seven minutes gone in the round.
Pontes cracks Thor with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Thor looks to clinch

and Pontes counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Pontes.
Pontes trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Thor wants to stand up but Pontes is controlling him.
Thor is breathing heavily.
Pontes wants to control from the top but Thor keeps moving.
Pontes is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Felipe Pontes wasn't active enough on the ground.
Thor tries to close the distance and clinch up but Pontes swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Pontes swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Thor wants to clinch but Pontes slips to the side
and Pontes cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Thor closes the distance looking to clinch
and Thor takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Pontes looks to land a combination but Thor avoids it well.
Pontes fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Thor manages to avoid it.

and Pontes counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Pontes lands with a cross.
Thor tries to clinch up
letting Pontes counter with a right hand.
Thor Thor is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

That's nine minutes gone in the round.
Donk. Pontes catches Thor right on the button with a cross.
Thor closes the distance but Pontes moves to the side

and Pontes counters with a takedown into side control.
Pontes landing strikes.
Thor pushes Pontes away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Pontes gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Thor takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Thor takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Thor wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Pontes is working Thor over with some ground and pound from side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Pontes is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Thor's shoulder. That is not cool.
Pontes trying to control the action but Thor is working from the bottom.

Pontes is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Thor looks calm but he's in trouble here. Pontes gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Thor is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Pontes lets go of the hold and Thor can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 9:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Felipe Pontes!
