The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Russel lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected. Cain tries to clinch up but Russel circles away and keeps his distance. Cain moves to clinch but Russel breaks away and Russel counters with a single leg into guard. Cain didn't expect that. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Russel working some strikes from top position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Russel wants to control from the top but Cain keeps moving. Russel controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. It looks like Russel might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Russel trying to control but Cain is working from the bottom. Russel thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. That's two minutes gone in the round. Russel is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Russel looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Russel perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ground and pound from Russel. Russel is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound. Cain could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Russel seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Cain does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Russel works his foot free and advances to mount. Russel landing strikes from the mount and Cain is in trouble! We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Russel lands a big shot to the head and Cain winces in pain. He's tapped out due to strikes!
