PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Shaun Nelson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gomi Bakanori (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nelson comes to the cage accompanied by In the Air Tonight. Bakanori comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Robinson kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Gomi Bakanori!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Arvi Lind and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nelson gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Nelson steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Bakanori.
Bakanori lunges at Nelson with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Nelson's hand.

Bakanori tries to keep at a distance but Nelson has taken the fight into the clinch.
Bakanori is trying to break the clinch but Nelson has him pressed against the cage.

Nelson manages to break the clinch.
Nelson tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Bakanori paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Nelson defending well as Bakanori loads up on a big left hand.
Gomi Bakanori seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Bakanori fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Nelson looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Bakanori stuffs the takedown attempt from Nelson. Nelson gets slowly back to his feet.
Bakanori swings away with a body shot that misses

and Nelson moves into the clinch.
Bakanori is looking to break free of the clinch but Nelson has double underhooks.
Bakanori tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Nelson's elbow.

Nelson is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Bakanori can't fight it off and eventually Nelson manages to take the fight to the floor. Bakanori looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Nelson is looking to work some ground and pound but Bakanori has wrist control.

Nelson is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Bakanori looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Nelson puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Bakanori works his way to full guard. Good work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nelson pushes down on Bakanori's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Nelson passes to side control.

Nelson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Bakanori is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Bakanori is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Nelson off and has taken his back!
Bakanori is throwing punches to the body, looking to soften Nelson up.

Nelson is trapped and Bakanori is scoring with shots to the head and body.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Nelson trying to control the action but Bakanori just sinks the hooks in.

Bakanori is trying to stick to Nelson's back but Nelson is turning into Bakanori. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Bakanori's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Nelson.
Nelson tries to free his leg and advance position but Bakanori is retaining full guard.

Bakanori is looking for a triangle but Nelson pushes his legs off easily.
Bakanori really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Nelson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Bakanori is trying to control Nelson's posture but Nelson avoids it.
Bakanori tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Nelson is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Bakanori knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Bakanori is looking to reverse the position.
Nelson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Bakanori keeps working.
Nelson misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Nelson tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Nelson has an Americana. Bakanori didn't react quickly enough there and he's in big trouble now! He tries to squirm out but is forced to tap! Nelson is delighted and gyrates in front of the ring girls. They seem to like the attention - it'll be interesting to see if Nelson hooks up with any of them at the after show party.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:21 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Shaun Nelson!
