PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rickson Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jim Duggan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gracie comes to the ring accompanied by Brazilian national anthem by Ill Nino. Duggan has chosen The United States National Anthem as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Roosa Järviläinen and Tarja Halkonen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Duggan throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Gracie tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Duggan is in Gracie's guard.

Gracie has his foot on Duggan's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Duggan works his way back into a safe position though.

Duggan wants to control from the top but Gracie keeps moving.

Duggan wants to work for an arm triangle but Gracie is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Duggan is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Gracie defends it well.

Gracie is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Duggan pulls his head out easily.

Gracie is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Duggan's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Duggan's back!

Duggan is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Gracie is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Duggan knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Duggan for a finish.

Gracie doesn't have the hooks in and Duggan manages to turn into his guard.

Duggan thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Duggan really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gracie. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Duggan is looking for a kimura but Gracie is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Duggan to get the leverage.

Duggan is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Duggan is keen to just control but Gracie is a slippery customer.

That was a close round but I would say that Rickson Gracie will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business.


Gracie fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Gracie misses with a takedown attempt - Duggan sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Duggan closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Duggan wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gracie keeps working.

Duggan drops back looking for a leg! Gracie is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Gracie manages to kick Duggan off! Duggan jumps back into Gracie's guard.

Gracie can't keep his opponent in guard - Duggan advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Duggan slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Gracie has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Duggan is working away from the top position though.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!



Duggan closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Duggan has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Gracie to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Duggan is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Gracie pulls down on the head and he's put Duggan to sleep! This one is all over!

Our winner, Rickson Gracie, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
