PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Steve Menzies (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ralle Pihl (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pihl has chosen Run to the hills as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Steve Menzies!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 17 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ralle Pihl!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Steve Erwin and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Menzies shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Pihl keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Menzies jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Pihl manages to avoid the submission attempt.

Menzies stands up.
The crowd cheers as Menzies lands an impressive looking overhand right. Pihl doesn't seem phased though.
Menzies lands with a nice body punch.
Menzies getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Pihl tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Menzies manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Pihl tries to clinch up but Menzies circles away and keeps his distance.
Pihl is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Pihl shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Menzies sprawls well. Menzies wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Pihl gets slowly back to his feet.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Ralle Pihl seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Pihl moves into the clinch.
Pihl tries to score a body lock takedown but Menzies shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Menzies pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Pihl looks to clinch
and Menzies counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Menzies tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Pihl paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Menzies circles away from the clinch attempt.
Pihl fails with a takedown attempt.
Steve Menzies has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ralle Pihl.
Pihl looks gassed!

Menzies rushes Pihl and presses him up against the cage.
Menzies blocks an uppercut.

Menzies breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Menzies is looking to clinch.
Menzies leaves Pihl with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Pihl shoots in looking for a takedown. Menzies tries to sprawl out of it but Pihl keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Menzies manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Menzies shoots in but no luck this time.

Menzies clinches.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Menzies is looking to break free of the clinch but Pihl has double underhooks.
Menzies pressing his opponent against the cage.
Pihl is trying to force a seperation but Menzies has the dominant position.

Menzies breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Menzies misses with a body shot.

Menzies closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Pihl did well to prevent Menzies getting side control.
Menzies is controlling the pace.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Menzies is looking for a kimura but Pihl is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Menzies to get the leverage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Menzies missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Pihl really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Menzies. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Menzies with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Menzies throwing shots but Pihl is blocking nicely.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Menzies in particular looking to stall.

Menzies is trying to work for a kimura but Pihl is defending well.
Menzies seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Pihl does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Menzies stops Pihl from getting back to his feet.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Pihl can do anything to dispel that myth.
Menzies content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Menzies throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Menzies is trying to control. Pihl wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Menzies has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

We're going to have a standup here because Steve Menzies wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Menzies connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Pihl tries to close the distance and clinch but Menzies swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Pihl moves into the clinch.

Pihl is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Menzies can't fight it off and eventually Pihl manages to take the fight to the floor. Menzies looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Menzies bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Pihl's guard.
Pihl keeping moving, preventing Menzies from controlling successfully.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Menzies not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Menzies cracks Pihl with a solid left hand.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steve Menzies dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Pihl dives in and grabs Menzies's left leg, looking for a takedown. Menzies pushes down on Pihl's head and hops out.

Menzies closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Pihl to the mat! Pihl manages to get full guard.

Menzies slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Pihl wants to stand up but Menzies is controlling him.
Menzies content to stall in guard here.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Steve Menzies just wasn't active enough.
Horrible takedown by Menzies or perhaps it was just good defense by Pihl which made him look bad.
Pihl tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Menzies manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Menzies swats away the attempt to clinch by Pihl.

Pihl gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Pihl wants to get back to his feet but Menzies passes into half guard.
Pihl is breathing heavily.
Menzies performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Menzies throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Menzies is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Pihl has managed to free his arm - good work.
Menzies is controlling the pace.
Menzies is looking to advance position but Pihl won't allow it.

Menzies wants to control but Pihl is keeping him busy.
Menzies working the head and body with strikes.
Pihl looks like he's trying to stand up.

Menzies is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Menzies is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Pihl!

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Pihl's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.

Menzies landing strikes from the mount and Pihl is in trouble!
Pihl is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Menzies looking to finish Pihl with some ground and pound. This is bad for Pihl!
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Menzies controlling the pace for now.
Menzies postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Pihl looks a forlorn figure.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Menzies controlling the position easily from mount.
Menzies is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Pihl can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Pihl in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.

Menzies is landing with some decent strikes but Pihl is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Menzies lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.

Menzies is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Pihl is still in real trouble! Can Menzies finish him?
Menzies postures up and connects with a big shot that has rocked Pihl badly. He's trying desperately to grab hold of Menzies around the waist but Menzies pushes him off and unloads with more strikes, forcing the referee to jump in and save him! Menzies is the winner by TKO! Menzies jumps onto the cage and shouts into the camera. "We did it momma!"

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:32 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Steve Menzies!
