PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Derek Patterson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Codie Ober (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Patterson has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Derek Patterson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Codie Ober!
The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Matti Vanhoillinen and Anni Minnemäki.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Patterson fails with an attempt to clinch.
Derek Patterson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ober looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Patterson tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Ober paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Ober gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Ober escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Patterson slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Patterson swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Ober drives through with a takedown into guard.

Ober must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Patterson is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Ober is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Patterson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Ober doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Ober manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Ober really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Patterson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Ober content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Patterson has locked up a guillotine! Patterson's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Ober is holding on here and Patterson must be using up a lot of energy. Ober has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Patterson gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!
