Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Stanislav Valentinov! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, James Sanders! The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Thiago Cunha and Luis Engracia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Sanders. Sanders will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Valentinov wants to clinch. Sanders throws a nice looking combination but Valentinov bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sanders clinches. Valentinov pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. A head kick by Sanders misses and Valentinov counters with a head kick that drops Sanders - he's looking to finish, following his stunned foe to the ground! We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Sanders has one foot on Valentinov's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Valentinov looks to clinch and Sanders counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Valentinov! Sanders content just to control the position here. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sanders looking to finish with strikes here!
Sanders misses with a head shot. Sanders has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Valentinov wants to control but Sanders is having none of it. Sanders wants to control the pace but Valentinov is squirming around nicely.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sanders is trying to take his opponent's back.
Sanders stands up from mount. Strange move. Sanders misses with a takedown attempt - Valentinov sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Stanislav Valentinov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Sanders. Sanders shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Valentinov but Valentinov pushes him off and we're back to square one.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sanders clinches up with Valentinov and pushes him back against the cage. Sanders wants a takedown but no success here.
Valentinov wants to get back to striking at distance but Sanders won't allow it.
Valentinov can't break the clinch.
Sanders is working for takedown but Valentinov is calmly controlling the position for now. Valentinov is looking to break free of the clinch but Sanders has double underhooks. Sanders is trying to pull guard but Valentinov turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch. Sanders tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Valentinov smiles and moves away.
Stanislav Valentinov is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Sanders is trying hard to land a takedown here. Valentinov sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Sanders shoots in but no luck this time. A low kick from Sanders is predictable there and as Sanders loses concentration momentarily, Valentinov counters with a picture perfect head kick! Sanders goes down, out cold! The referee rushed in to check on his condition - I'm sure he'll be ok but that was a massive knockout!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 5:30 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Head Kick). Stanislav Valentinov!
