PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Dok Halidai (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Edward Wong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wong comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Legend of the USS Titanic kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Dok Halidai!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Edward Wong!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Aafke Stam and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Halidai tries to close the distance and clinch but Wong swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Halidai throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Edward Wong seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Halidai pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Halidai fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Wong checks it well.
Wong shoots in but Halidai avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Halidai moves into the clinch successfully.
Halidai is pressed up against the cage. Wong has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Halidai down to the mat. Halidai avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Halidai pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Wong circles away from the clinch attempt.
Dok Halidai is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Halidai tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Wong misses with a left hand
and Halidai counters with a leg kick.
Wong uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Halidai.
Halidai swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Wong.
Halidai uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Wong.
Halidai misses with an uppercut.
Wong lands a jab to Halidai's midsection.
Wong takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Wong is defended easily by Halidai.
Dok Halidai has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Edward Wong.
Halidai feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Wong's calf.
Halidai displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Wong throws out the jab.
Halidai takes one on the button.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
A head kick misses from Halidai.
Wong shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Halidai as he avoids it easily.

Wong fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Halidai throws the kick towards the body but Wong avoids it.
Halidai misses with a low kick.
Halidai throws a low kick but Wong moves out of range easily.
Halidai swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Wong manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Halidai on his heels. He'll look to pass Halidai's guard now, I'm sure.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Wong tries to free his leg and advance position but Halidai is retaining full guard.
Wong controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Wong with a flurry of punches that miss.
Wong content to stall in guard here.
Wong is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Wong tries to free his leg and advance position but Halidai is retaining full guard.
Wong seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Wong makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Edward Wong will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

so Wong counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Wong preventing the sweep.
Wong tries to free his leg and advance position but Halidai is retaining full guard.
Wong passes into half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Wong's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Wong has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Wong not landing any meaningful shots this time.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Wong is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Halidai defends it well.
Halidai trying to hold on to Wong's head to control him but Wong postures up.
Wong is controlling the pace.
Halidai wants to get back to his feet.
Wong wants to pass to mount but Halidai is defending the position.
Wong perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Halidai wants to control but Wong is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Wong drives through with a takedown into Halidai's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Wong seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Wong drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Halidai manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Wong has Halidai in his guard.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Wong. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Wong is looking for a triangle but Halidai pushes his legs off easily.

Wong trying to control the position.
Wong keeping moving, preventing Halidai from controlling successfully.

Wong is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Halidai is aware though and is defending well.

Wong has his foot on Halidai's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Halidai works his way back into a safe position though.
Wong trying to keep a closed guard but Halidai is proving a slippery customer.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Halidai trying to control but Wong is working from the bottom.

Halidai is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Wong is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Wong looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Halidai is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Halidai has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Dok Halidai just wasn't active enough.

Wong closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Halidai to the mat! Halidai manages to get full guard.

Edward Wong showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Halidai will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Wong advances to half guard.
Wong works his way into full mount!

Halidai takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Halidai really wants to buck Wong off and get back to his feet.
Halidai takes a big shot to the dome and his eyes have rolled back in his head! Wong's killer instinct has kicked in as he finishes the fight with more strikes. Impressive finish.

In his post fight interview, Edward Wong gave a big smile as he said 'Fuckin way she goes'.
