Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Leo Vieira! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Chesney Hawkes! The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Ryoma Takatsuka and Roger Salmon.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A head kick misses from Hawkes. Hawkes is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Vieira wants to clinch up but Hawkes keeps it at a distance. Vieira tries to clinch there but Hawkes circles away.
Hawkes circles away from the clinch attempt and Vieira takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Hawkes jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Vieira tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Hawkes manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Vieira rushes Hawkes and presses him up against the cage. Hawkes tries for a takedown but Vieira manages to get underhooks.
Vieira throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges. Vieira avoiding damage.
Vieira putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Hawkes in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Vieira creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Hawkes's defenses. Hawkes jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Vieira walks away with a smile on his face. Hawkes gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Vieira fails with an attempt to clinch.
Hawkes fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Leo Vieira has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chesney Hawkes. Hawkes shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Vieira is trying to defend but Hawkes finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Hawkes is pressing down on Vieira's thigh, looking to free his foot. Vieira is holding on for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hawkes is looking to take a break and control but Vieira is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Vieira avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Hawkes. Vieira pushes Hawkes off looking to stand but Hawkes dives back in and keeps control.
Hawkes missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Hawkes wants to lay and pray for a moment but Vieira keeps working. Hawkes is figuring out what he wants to do next. Hawkes sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Vieira defending well though.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hawkes is trying to control the action in half guard but Vieira is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Chesney Hawkes. Hawkes throws out a loose jab but Vieira uses good head movement to avoid it. Vieira tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Hawkes decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Vieira's guard. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Vieira keeping moving, preventing Hawkes from controlling successfully. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Hawkes throws a strike but Vieira rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Vieira trying to stand up but can't free himself from Hawkes's guard. Hawkes trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from! There's a bit of a scramble here and now Hawkes is on top in guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hawkes postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Hawkes passes Vieira's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Hawkes is trying to control the action in half guard but Vieira is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Hawkes thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Hawkes tries to pass the half guard into mount. Vieira knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Hawkes seems to be working for a kimura but Vieira defends the submission attempt. Hawkes is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Hawkes is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Vieira! Vieira knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Hawkes on the ground.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Hawkes controlling the position easily from mount. Vieira trying desperately to get to his feet.
Vieira holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Hawkes tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Hawkes has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Vieira is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Hawkes thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Hawkes tries to control but Vieira wriggling away. Hawkes thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Chesney Hawkes dominated that round. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Hawkes misses with a straight right. Vieira leaves Hawkes with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Hawkes keeps the fight on the outside. Horrible takedown by Hawkes or perhaps it was just good defense by Vieira which made him look bad. Vieira tries to clinch but Hawkes is having none of it. Hawkes throws an off balance right hand
and Vieira counters by moving into the clinch. Vieira slowing the pace effectively. A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors. Vieira scores a nice knee to the body.
Hawkes jumps guard but Vieira stands there with Hawkes around his waist. Hawkes gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Leo Vieira has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chesney Hawkes. Hawkes looking for a takedown. The pace really dropping off here, momentarily. Hawkes doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
A knee to the head by Vieira.
That's one minute gone in the round. Vieira scores with a knee to the head.
Vieira is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Hawkes is keeping busy. Vieira crunches a lovely knee into Hawkes's ribcage. Hawkes gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Vieira regains guard.
Hawkes trying to control the position from guard on top but Vieira is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Hawkes stops Vieira from standing up. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Hawkes distracts Vieira with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Hawkes throwing strikes from guard but Vieira blocks nicely. Vieira can't keep his opponent in guard - Hawkes advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Hawkes thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hawkes is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Vieira! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Hawkes tries to control but Vieira wriggling away. The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Hawkes cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Hawkes looking to control but Vieira is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Hawkes is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Vieira has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Vieira! Vieira is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Hawkes has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Vieira is looking to defend but Hawkes has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Vieira! Hawkes pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Vieira taps out and this one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Chesney Hawkes!
