PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Sergei Sokolov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Randon Rett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rett is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: I want you to die.. The key to victory for Sergei Sokolov has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Randon Rett!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Konstantin Menshow and Illya Tyunina.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sokolov uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Rett.

The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.

Rett gets control of Sokolov's arms and successfully pulls guard. Rett will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

The referee warns Sokolov that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Rett throws some wild stikes that Sokolov manages to avoid easily.

Sokolov holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Rett tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Sokolov has worked his way to half guard, taking advantage of Rett's lack of action.

Rett is working for a kimura but Sokolov is defending it quite comfortably.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Sokolov tries to clinch but Rett is having none of it.
Sokolov keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rett throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Rett throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Sokolov closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Rett blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Rett tries to pull guard but Sokolov holds him up against the cage and eventually Rett drops back down to his feet.

Rett is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Sokolov can't fight it off and eventually Rett manages to take the fight to the floor. Sokolov looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Rett controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Rett lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Rett wants to control from the top but Sokolov keeps moving.
Rett with a flurry of punches that miss.

Sokolov bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Rett's guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Rett moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Sokolov throws a strike but Rett rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Rett is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Rett wants to control from the top but Sokolov keeps moving.
Rett passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Rett trying to control the position but Sokolov is working away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Randon Rett showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Rett shoots in for a takedown but Sokolov shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Rett circles away from the clinch attempt.
Rett shoots in for a double leg but Sokolov sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Sergei Sokolov is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Rett misses with a double jab.

and Rett counters with a single leg into guard. Sokolov didn't expect that.
Rett looking to sit in guard and control but Sokolov gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Rett is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Rett is trying to control the position but Sokolov postures up.

Rett isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Sokolov stacks Rett on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Sokolov!

Rett can't do much from the bottom here.
Rett is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Sokolov's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Rett has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Sokolov working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sokolov looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Rett with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Rett regains full guard. Nicely done.

Rett is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Randon Rett has got the better of the ground game so far.
Sergei Sokolov has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Randon Rett is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Rett has his hands on Sokolov's head, controlling the position.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Randon Rett hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

and Rett counters with a straight punch to the midsection.

Rett shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Sokolov manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Randon Rett comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Rett winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
