PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jayden Mai (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jean Bon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mai kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is One. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Jayden Mai!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Jean Bon!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Daniel Bishop and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mai fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Mai throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Bon fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Mai avoids it really well and circles away.
Mai tries to bum rush Bon with a series of wild strikes but Bon uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Bon on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.


It looks like Jean Bon has been cut.

Bon has Mai up against the cage in a clinch.
Bon has Mai pressed against the cage, preventing Mai from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Bon decides to pull guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Mai looking to pass the guard.

Mai is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Mai won't allow Bon to sweep him here.
Bon looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Bon is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Bon looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Mai looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Bon throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Bon not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Mai is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Bon pulls his head out easily.
Bon is controlling the pace.
Bon is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Bon seems to be working for a kimura but Mai defends the submission attempt.
Bon stalling.
Bon wants to pass the guard but Mai is defending well.
Mai is trying to get back to full guard.
Mai might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Mai trying to control but Bon postures up.
Bon is controlling the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Jean Bon was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Mai scores with a push kick.
Mai paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Mai scores with a jab to the jaw.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Bon defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Mai.
Mai connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Bon momentarily.
Bon tries to clinch there but Mai circles away.
Mai swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Mai scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.

Bon fails with a takedown attempt.
Mai throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Bon counters with a series of strikes. Mai will be more careful next time no doubt.
Bon has a takedown stuffed.
Jayden Mai has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jean Bon.
Bon looks gassed!
Bon looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
No luck for Bon with that takedown attempt.

Mai forces Bon back against the cage and clinches.

Bon breaks from the clinch.
Mai throws a poor cross that misses
and Bon counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Mai shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

That has opened up Jean Bon's cut even more.
Bon ducks under a wild hook from Mai.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The cut man is working on Jean Bon's cut.
That's time! Mai's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Mai takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Bon misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Jayden Mai seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Bon takes the fight into the clinch.
Mai is trying to drag Bon to the mat but Bon just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Mai is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Bon gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Mai wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Bon has him pressed against the cage.

Bon has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Mai uses from the top position.
Bon has momentary wrist control but Mai slips an elbow through the middle.
Mai tries to stand but Bon is controlling from the bottom.
Bon throws some sloppy strikes off his back.

Bon pulls Mai in close to prevent any damage.

Mai has gone for a leg lock! Bon slips out almost immediately though and dives into Mai's guard.

Mai is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Bon controlling from the top position.

Bon won't allow Mai to sweep him here.
Jean Bon has got the better of the ground game so far.
Bon controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Bon throws a big right hand that misses.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jean Bon hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Bon is trying hard to land a takedown here. Mai sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Mai is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
Mai tries to close the distance and clinch up but Bon swats him away and circles back towards the center.
No joy there for Mai, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Nice uppercut lands for Mai. That snapped Bon's head back.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Bon pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Bon scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Bon uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Mai.
Mai tries to close the distance and clinch up but Bon swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Mai misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Bon turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Bon shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Mai scores with a jab to the jaw.
Mai throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Bon on the side of the head.
Bon keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jayden Mai. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Bon throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Mai's waist but Mai gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Bon off to one side.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Mai missing with a left hand there. Bon was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Mai.
Mai shoots in for a double leg but Bon sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Bon shoots in and drives through. Mai sprawls well.
Bon tries for a takedown but Mai sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Bon dodges the punch combination from Mai.
Mai lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Bon closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Bon takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Mai stuffs the takedown.
Bon slips a jab from Mai.
Mai thuds his right hand into Bon's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Mai shoots in looking for a takedown but Bon manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Mai's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Mai throws a half hearted mid kick.
Bon closes this distance looking for a takedown but Mai circles away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jayden Mai dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Jean Bon's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Mai lands with a cross.
Mai pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Bon takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Mai shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Mai throws a good cross that connects.


The cut above Jean Bon's eye is starting to cause him problems now.

Bon drives through and clinches with Mai against the cage.
Mai can't get the takedown.
Bon avoiding damage.
Mai is looking to break free of the clinch but Bon has double underhooks.
Mai fails to pull guard.

Bon pulls guard effortlessly.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Bon utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Bon has Mai pulled in close to control his posture.
Mai landing with the ground and pound.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mai tries to stand but Bon is controlling from the bottom.
Mai trying to control the position from guard on top but Bon is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Mai stands and throws Bon's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Bon manages to work his way to half guard, despite Mai's best efforts.

Mai is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Bon is looking to improve his position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Bon is trying to maintain the position but Mai is very close to passing his half guard.

Mai seems to be working for a kimura but Bon defends the submission attempt.
Bon wants to control but Mai is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Mai working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mai is working for a kimura but Bon is defending it quite comfortably.

Bon has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mai is working away from the top position though.
Bon has his hands clasped together around Mai's back. He's all about the action.
Bon is trying to control but can't.
Mai tries to pass to full mount but Bon defends it.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Bon is controlling Mai's position as best he can from this difficult position.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jean Bon hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Bon avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Mai looks to score with a jab to the body but Bon is just out of range.
Mai connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Mai lands a lovely overhand right.
Mai shoots in and drives through. Bon sprawls well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jayden Mai. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bon shoots in but no luck this time.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Mai gets tackled into the cage by Bon. Bon maintains the clinch.
Bon has a pretty nasty looking mouse under his right eye.

Bon breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Bon misses with a takedown attempt - Mai sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Mai misses with a hook.
Jayden Mai is winning the standup battle so far.
Bon shoots in for a takedown but Mai shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Jean Bon has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Jayden Mai is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Mai throws a head kick but Bon moves out of range.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jayden Mai showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Mai, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A less than humble Jayden Mai misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
