PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kuroda Atsushi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johnny Woo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kuroda Atsushi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Johnny Woo!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Steve Erwin and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Good exchange - Woo coming out on top.
Woo wants to clinch up but Atsushi keeps it at a distance.

Atsushi throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Woo tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Atsushi is in Woo's guard.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Atsushi throws a big right hand that misses.
Atsushi stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Woo swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Woo is looking to stand up but Atsushi isn't so interested in that idea.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Woo has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Atsushi can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Atsushi postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Atsushi has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Atsushi is looking to advance position but Woo has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Woo is working for a kimura but Atsushi is defending it quite comfortably.

Woo thows a huge punch but Atsushi dodges it nicely.
Woo tries to pass the half guard into mount. Atsushi knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Atsushi preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Woo throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Atsushi is staying active underneath Woo, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Woo is fighting to break Atsushi's control of his arms but Atsushi is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Woois looking to pass into half guard but Atsushi pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Atsushi is in guard.
Atsushi controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Atsushi stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Woo swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Woo tries to escape but Atsushi is in control.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Woo is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Atsushi off and has taken his back!
Woo is trying to stick to Atsushi's back but Atsushi is turning into Woo. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Woo's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Atsushi.

Woo manages to escape and get back to his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

and Atsushi counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Woo is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Woo shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Atsushi pinned against the cage. Atsushi gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Kuroda Atsushi will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!



Woo gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Atsushi to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Woo escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Atsushi gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Atsushi is looking to take a break and control but Woo is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Woo is refusing to be controlled, as Atsushi sits in half guard.

Atsushi leaves Woo with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Atsushi looks to throw the jab but Woo is out of range.
Woo is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

A solid leg kick lands there for Atsushi.

Atsushi wants to lay and pray for a moment but Woo keeps working.
Woo pushes Atsushi away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Atsushi gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Atsushi lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Atsushi uses his free foot to push down on Woo's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Woo.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Atsushi lands a big shot there that rocks Woo but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Atsushi lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Kuroda Atsushi overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Woo is bucking up trying to escape but Atsushi cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Woo shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Atsushi defends it nicely.
Kuroda Atsushi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Johnny Woo.
Woo takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Atsushi misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Atsushi drives through with a takedown into Woo's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Atsushi is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Woo is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Woo takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Atsushi is nestled in close to Woo, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
