PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tony Cuevas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Barry Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cuevas comes to the cage accompanied by Leave Us Alone/ Dead By Gun. Smith has chosen When Will They Shoot as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 12 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Barry Smith!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Dillan Fox and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cuevas fails with a takedown attempt.
Cuevas throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Smith's waist but Smith gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Cuevas off to one side.
Cuevas shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Smith pinned against the cage. Smith gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tony Cuevas. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Cuevas tries to close the distance and clinch but Smith swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

That was a close round but I would say that Tony Cuevas will probably get the nod.

Cuevas is trying to trip Smith. He has hold of a leg but Smith is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Cuevas persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Smith manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Smith lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

It looks like Tony Cuevas has been cut.

Smith tries to control but Cuevas wriggling away.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smith is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Cuevas has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Cuevas!
Cuevas is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Smith isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Cuevas stacks Smith on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Cuevas!

Cuevas remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

I would just about give that final round to Barry Smith.
Well Smith has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
