PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Robert Plesniak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Phil Ryan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Phil Ryan struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 156.6lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Phil Ryan is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Robert Plesniak!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Phil Ryan!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, James Atkins and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Plesniak closes the distance and clinches.
Plesniak tries to land a knee to the head but misses.

Ryan decides to pull guard.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Plesniak trying to move into half guard but instead Ryan has managed to sweep!
Plesniak has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Ryan wanted to stand there but Plesniak had control of the position.

Ryan won't allow Plesniak to sweep him here.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Ryan shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Plesniak as he jumps to the side.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Ryan is defended easily by Plesniak.

Ryan fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Robert Plesniak has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Phil Ryan.
Ryan takes one to the side of the head.
Ryan avoids the head kick by Plesniak.
Plesniak tries to close the distance and clinch up but Ryan swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Robert Plesniak seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Plesniak stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Ryan is trying hard to land a takedown here. Plesniak sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Plesniak darts in and clinches Ryan up against the cage.

Ryan jumps guard and drags Plesniak to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Plesniak stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ryan swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Plesniak loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Plesniak trying to control the position from guard on top but Ryan is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Plesniak is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

We're going to have a standup here because Robert Plesniak wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Plesniak misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Plesniak throws a jab when Ryan was well out of range.
Ryan circles away from the clinch attempt.
Ryan has his takedown stuffed

and Plesniak counters with a shoot takedown. Ryan fights it but they end up in guard.

Plesniak has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Plesniak pushes down on Ryan's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Plesniak working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Ryan is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Plesniak jumps into side control!
Ryan is looking to reverse the position.
Plesniak controlling the position from side mount.
Ryan is trying to control Plesniak's posture but Plesniak avoids it.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Plesniak tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Plesniak has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Ryan steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Plesniak.
Plesniak tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Ryan manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Plesniak drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Plesniak content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Plesniak in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.

Plesniak working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Plesniak sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Ryan is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Ryan wants to control but Plesniak postures up.
Plesniak working the ground and pound but Ryan is defending the strikes.
Ryan is trying to control Plesniak's posture but Plesniak avoids it.
Ryan tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Plesniak wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Plesniak moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Plesniak throws a strike aimed at the side of Ryan's head but Ryan avoids it well.

Plesniak goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Ryan has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Plesniak but great work by Ryan.
Plesniak can't do much from the bottom here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The ground and pound from Ryan seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
You can see the frustration on Plesniak's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Plesniak tries to control but Ryan manages to take his back.
Ryan is trying to stick to Plesniak's back but Plesniak is turning into Ryan. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Ryan's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Plesniak.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Ryan controls Plesniak momentarily but Plesniak frees himself.
Plesniak wants to control from the top but Ryan keeps moving.

Plesniak with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Ryan looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Ryan bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Plesniak's guard.

Plesniak wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Plesniak is looking to clinch but Ryan is avoiding it.
Robert Plesniak is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
A shot to the liver by Ryan. Beautiful body shot.
Ryan dives in and grabs Plesniak's left leg, looking for a takedown. Plesniak pushes down on Ryan's head and hops out.

Plesniak rushes Ryan and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Plesniak creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Ryan's defenses.

Plesniak turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!



Excellent takedown into side control there by Plesniak.
Plesniak looks up at the clock and then as Ryan takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Plesniak smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Ryan tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Plesniak scores with a couple of short elbows.
Plesniak laying and praying for a moment but Ryan takes advantage and regains half guard.
Plesniak is keen to just control but Ryan is a slippery customer.

Plesniak is working for a kimura but Ryan is defending it quite comfortably.
Plesniak wants to pass to mount but Ryan is defending the position.

Plesniak wants to advance to full mount but Ryan doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.
Ryan is trying to keep Plesniak in close.

Plesniak is trying to control. Ryan wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Plesniak is trying to control the action in half guard but Ryan is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Plesniak working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Ryan's thigh. Ryan counters though and makes it back to full guard.
Plesniak wants to control from the top but Ryan keeps moving.

Plesniak throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Ryan works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

and Ryan counters with a nice double leg into side control. Plesniak won't be happy with that.

Robert Plesniak showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Plesniak has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
