The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Riley throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Gi on the side of the head. Gi gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Riley to score an easy takedown into full guard. Riley is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Riley tries to free his leg and advance position but Gi is retaining full guard. Gi might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Riley is pushing down on Gi's leg trying to pass to half guard. Gi is fighting to maintain full guard but Riley has managed to sneak the leg through. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Riley wants to work for an arm triangle but Gi is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Riley wants to work for an arm triangle but Gi is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Riley looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Riley has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Gi defend it? Riley steps over the head and cranks it - Gi is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Riley!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:44 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). John Riley!
