PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jake Hurrell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kyle Nowak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jake Hurrell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kyle Nowak!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, John Mangel and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hurrell tries to clinch up but Nowak circles away and keeps his distance.
Nowak lands a leg kick that knocks Hurrell off balance momentarily.

Nowak moves into the clinch.
Nowak's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Hurrell tries to pull guard but Nowak holds him up against the cage and eventually Hurrell drops back down to his feet.
Hurrell tries to pull guard but Nowak won't allow it.
Nowak lands an elbow that stopped Hurrell in his tracks for a moment.
Hurrell is trying to pull guard but Nowak has him pressed against the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jake Hurrell. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Nowak breaks the clinch.
Nowak circles away from the clinch attempt.
Hurrell shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Nowak but Nowak pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Hurrell lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Nowak backs up against the cage.
Hurrell shoots for a takedown but Nowak saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Hurrell is breathing heavily.

Nowak drives through and clinches with Hurrell against the cage.
Nowak lands an elbow inside that Hurrell shrugs off.
Hurrell is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Nowak to keep the fight standing.
Hurrell wants to break free but Nowak has control.
Nowak lands an elbow inside that Hurrell shrugs off.
Hurrell wants a takedown.

Nowak breaks the clinch.

Hurrell tries to keep at a distance but Nowak has taken the fight into the clinch.
Nowak will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Hurrell up against the cage.

Nowak tries for a takedown. No joy.

Nowak's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Hurrell goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Nowak clinches up against the cage.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Nowak stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

Hurrell breaks the clinch.
Nowak throws a sloppy head kick and Hurrell moves out of range easily.
Nowak is looking to chop away at Hurrell's legs.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hurrell misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Hurrell fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Hurrell on the wrong end of a kick to the body.
Nowak lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Hurrell has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Nowak.
Nowak fails to land the takedown.
Nowak fails with a takedown attempt.
Hurrell throws an off balance right hand
and Nowak counters with a nice low kick that buckles Hurrell's knee momentarily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hurrell fails with a takedown attempt.

Nowak closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Hurrell is trying to pull guard but Nowak turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Nowak with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.

Nowak manages to pull guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Nowak is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Hurrell is aware though and is defending well.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Hurrell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Nowak swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Hurrell trying to control the position from guard on top but Nowak is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kyle Nowak dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Hurrell looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Nowak closes the distance and pushes Hurrell back into the cage.
Hurrell blocks an elbow strike from Nowak.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Nowak takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
Hurrell looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Hurrell tries to break the clinch but Nowak is controlling the position.
Hurrell stops a takedown attempt from Nowak.

Nowak ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Nowak no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Hurrell knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Nowak on the ground.
Nowak is breathing heavily.
Nowak is controlling Hurrell's posture.

Hurrell throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Nowak works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Nowak keeping full guard, as Hurrell tries to pass.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nowak seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Kyle Nowak has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Hurrell throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Nowak's waist but Nowak gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Hurrell off to one side.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Nowak is trying to push Hurrell away but Hurrell has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Nowak gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Hurrell.

Nowak breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Nowak misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Hurrell throws a series of punches but Nowak moves out of range.

Hurrell is trying to break the clinch but Nowak is controlling him.
Hurrell is trying to break the clinch but Nowak has him pressed against the cage.

Nowak escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Nowak moves into the clinch successfully.
Nowak is pushing Hurrell up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Hurrell drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Nowak landing knees to the head.

Hurrell fails to pull guard.
Kyle Nowak seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.

Nowak breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Nowak moves into the clinch successfully.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Hurrell is trying to force a seperation but Nowak has the dominant position.
Hurrell looking for a takedown.
Nowak tries to score a body lock takedown but Hurrell shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
The referee calls for Nowak to work.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Nowak pulls guard.
Hurrell stopping the sweep attempt from Nowak.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kyle Nowak showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Hurrell throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Hurrell misses with the combination.
Hurrell shoots in for a takedown but Nowak shows good takedown defense.
Hurrell fails with a takedown attempt.
Kyle Nowak seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Nowak shoots in looking for a takedown. Hurrell tries to sprawl out of it but Nowak keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Hurrell manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Nowak swats away the attempt to clinch by Hurrell.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Nowak misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Nowak lands with a nice body kick.

Hurrell tries to keep at a distance but Nowak has taken the fight into the clinch.
Nowak tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Hurrell is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Hurrell is trying to drag Nowak to the mat but Nowak just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Nowak is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Hurrell gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Nowak manages to break the clinch.
Nowak tries to close the distance and clinch but Hurrell swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Nowak avoids a punch combination nicely.
Nowak lands a high kick!
Hurrell shoots for a double leg takedown but Nowak sprawls well. He's pushed Hurrell's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Nowak gets in close and instigates a clinch.
The referee is keeping an eye on Nowak - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Hurrell is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Nowak scores a nice knee to the body.
Hurrell wants a takedown.

Nowak decides to pull guard.
Nowak manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Hurrell manages to get himself to full guard.
Hurrell working a defensive guard but Nowak manages to pass into side control anyway.
Hurrell is trying to control Nowak's posture but Nowak avoids it.
Nowak scoring with punches and elbows.

Nowak throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Nowak content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Nowak misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Nowak decides to take the fight back to the feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Hurrell throws a lazy body kick
and Nowak makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Jake Hurrell is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Nowak throws a sloppy head kick and Hurrell moves out of range easily.
Jake Hurrell has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Kyle Nowak is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Hurrell misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kyle Nowak comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Nowak has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
