Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
22 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Travis Hunter! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
11 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Nelson Mandela! The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Gregory Folan and Trevor Gratis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hunter throws a series of punches but Mandela moves out of range. Hunter on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
A jab lands there for Mandela. Mandela throws the left hand but Hunter avoids the punch easily. Hunter stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Mandela. Mandela closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Mandela lands in his opponent's guard. Mandela advances position into side control! Mandela creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Hunter sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike. Hunter is looking for a sweep. Mandela scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Hunter to see if he's OK. This has been an exciting period of action! Hunter is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Mandela off and has taken his back! Mandela is really stuck here.
Mandela tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell! Mandela tries to reverse the position but Hunter maintains control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mandela manages to work a leg through to get back to half guard here. Good work there by Mandela, under a barage of strikes from Hunter.
Mandela is not content to let Hunter control the position. Mandela tries to roll over but Hunter keeps him under control. Mandela works his way to full guard. Good work. Mandela keeping moving, preventing Hunter from controlling successfully. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Hunter wants to pass the guard but Mandela is keeping the position. Mandela is looking to sinch up a triangle. Hunter throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Mandela's body to avoid the submission. Mandela has instead reached around Hunter's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Mandela arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Nelson Mandela! An out of breath Nelson Mandela thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
