PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Artem Vaits (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ruubens Cartnell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Artem Vaits!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 7 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ruubens Cartnell!
The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Fedor Mirinova.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vaits tries to score a power double leg takedown but Cartnell sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Vaits somewhat.
Vaits closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Vaits misses with a takedown attempt - Cartnell sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Vaits takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.

Vaits shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Cartnell manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Vaits trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Vaits postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Cartnell is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Vaits, into his guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cartnell connects with a couple of short punches.
Cartnell is looking to stand up but Vaits won't let him.
Cartnell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Vaits swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Vaits is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Cartnell would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Vaits can't keep his opponent in guard - Cartnell advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Cartnell lands a nice short elbow.
Vaits is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Cartnell is pressing down on Vaits's thigh, looking to free his foot. Vaits is holding on for now.

Vaits is staying active underneath Cartnell, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Cartnell in particular looking to stall.
Cartnell wants to get back to his feet.
Cartnell seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Cartnell trying to control the action but Vaits is working from the bottom.
Cartnell wants to stand but Vaits has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Cartnell really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Vaits. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Vaits is staying active underneath Cartnell, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Cartnell winds up and cracks Vaits with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Cartnell passes the guard and advances to mount!
Oh Vaits is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Cartnell postures up and throws a couple of big shots that have Vaits in real trouble here! The ref calls for Vaits to improve his position which he doesn't do, so the referee has no choice but to end the fight due to the strikes!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:36 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Ruubens Cartnell!
