PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Shay Bangwell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Caballero (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bangwell comes into the arena with Bon Jovi - Its my Life blaring out of the sound system. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Shay Bangwell! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, David Caballero! The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Reed Andrews and Joseph Jones.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bangwell fails with a takedown attempt. Shay Bangwell seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Caballero misses the shot to the body. Bangwell tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Caballero manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Caballero uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Bangwell.
Bangwell moves in looking to clinch but Caballero pushes him off. Bangwell moves to clinch but Caballero breaks away and Caballero makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range. Bangwell closes the distance but Caballero moves to the side and Caballero counters with a straight punch to the midsection. Bangwell fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Caballero avoids it really well and circles away.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bangwell doesn't manage to clinch there - Caballero circles away.
Bangwell wants to clinch but Caballero slips to the side and Caballero counters with a right hand to the body. A looping hook to the body misses from Caballero. Bangwell does a little dance to reset his feet. Caballero swings for the body but Bangwell moves out of range.
Bangwell just misses with a punch to the body.
Bangwell closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Caballero to the mat! Caballero manages to get full guard. Caballero controls Bangwell momentarily but Bangwell frees himself.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Bangwell slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Caballero looking to control.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Bangwell fails with an attempt to clinch.
Bangwell looks to score with a jab to the body but Caballero is just out of range. Caballero is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Bangwell rather than just go for the knockout. Bangwell tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Bangwell looks to clinch and Caballero counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Bangwell thinking. Caballero misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Bangwell.
Bangwell closes the distance and pushes Caballero back into the cage. Caballero taking a breather. The crowd are getting on Caballero's back here. They're not happy about his lack of aggression in the clinch. Bangwell looking for a takedown. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Shay Bangwell. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Bangwell is trying to force a seperation but Caballero has the dominant position. Bangwell tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Bangwell tries to pull guard but Caballero forces him back to his feet, against the cage. Bangwell being controlled against the cage. Bangwell is trying to pull guard but Caballero has him pressed against the cage. Bangwell tries to score a body lock takedown but Caballero shows good agility there to stay on his feet. Caballero taking a breather. Bangwell fails to pull the fight into his guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bangwell closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Caballero quickly recovers to half guard. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Bangwell is working for a kimura but Caballero is defending it quite comfortably.

That's one minute gone in the round. Caballero is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Caballero wants to get back to full guard but Bangwell has mounted him! Bangwell sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Bangwell will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Bangwell working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Caballero looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Bangwell! Submission of the night perhaps?
