Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Fernado Rua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matthew Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Smith has chosen Big and Red by EC as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Fernado Rua!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matthew Smith!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Alan Glass and Chris Downing.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Rua tries to avoid it but Smith manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Rua to the ground. Rua escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Smith shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Rua counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Smith looking for submissions off his back.
Rua missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Smith is looking to improve his position.
Smith is not content to let Rua control the position.
Smith is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Rua pulls his head out easily.
Smith regains full guard. Nicely done.

Rua avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Rua wants to stand but Smith is controlling his posture from full guard.
Smith wants to sweep here but Rua controlling him for the moment.
Rua would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Rua throws a strike but Smith rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Smith wants to pass the guard but Rua is keeping the position.
Rua is breathing heavily.
Smith has gone for a leg lock! Rua slips out almost immediately though and dives into Smith's guard.

Rua has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Rua wants to stand but Smith is controlling his posture from full guard.
Rua is fighting to break Smith's control of his arms but Smith is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith is trying to control the position but Rua postures up.
Rua postures up in Smith's guard and throws a big left but Smith blocks it.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Matthew Smith.
Rua throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Smith tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Rua is in Smith's guard.

Smith had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Rua defends it easily.
Rua in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Smith is looking for a triangle but Rua pushes his legs off easily.
Smith controlling the position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Smith controls Rua momentarily but Rua frees himself.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Smith keeping moving, preventing Rua from controlling successfully.
Smith has a closed guard, preventing Rua from standing up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Matthew Smith will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Smith lands with a nice combination. Rua backs away looking to recover.
Smith gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Rua counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Smith's guard now.
Rua wanted to stand there but Smith had control of the position.
Smith looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Smith tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Rua wants to stand but Smith is controlling his posture from full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Smith has his foot on Rua's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Rua works his way back into a safe position though.

Smith is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Rua has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Smith to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Rua is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Smith pulls down on the head and he's put Rua to sleep! This one is all over!

Matthew Smith was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
