Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Austin Worner! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nick Avila ! The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Gwen Towbar and Cecil Peabody.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Worner closes the distance and clinches up with Avila , looking for a takedown. Worner pushes Avila against the cage but Avila circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Worner stuffs the takedown. Avila fails to land the takedown. Avila cracks Worner with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd. Avila has managed to clinch.
Avila pulls guard successfully.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Worner loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Worner being controlled here momentarily. Worner will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Worner stopping the sweep attempt from Avila . Avila lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Worner! Avila throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.
That's one minute gone in the round. Avila tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Worner is in all sorts of trouble here.
Avila content just to control the position here. Worner in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Avila misses with a head shot. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Poor strikes thrown by Avila there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Avila takes Worner's back. Worner wants to get back to his feet. Worner breaks Avila 's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Avila avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Worner stopping the sweep attempt from Avila . The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Worner cracks Avila with a solid left hand. Worner throws a big elbow that misses. This has been an exciting period of action! Avila trying to control the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Avila preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Worner has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Worner working some strikes from top position. Worner wants to stand but Avila is controlling his posture from full guard. Worner is looking to work some ground and pound but Avila has wrist control. Worner working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Worner landing with the ground and pound. Avila is adopting a defensive guard. Worner throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Avila works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Avila is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Worner manages to get to full guard.
Avila looks gassed! Avila trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Worner manages to land a sweep and now he's on top! Avila has his feet on Worner's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Avila slaps away a takedown attempt from Worner, before circling back to the center of the mat. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Avila fails with a takedown attempt. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Nick Avila dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Worner tries to clinch up and Avila counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Worner is trying to stand up here but Avila is controlling him well. Worner gets back to full guard.
Avila with a flurry of punches that miss. Avila seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Avila pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Worner is keeping the position for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Worner has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Avila doesn't defend quickly enough and Worner has managed to lock this one up! Can Avila escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Worner on a fantastic submission victory.
