PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sho Kazuki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Funaki Fujiwara (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fujiwara has chosen T.N.T. by Tonedeff as his entrance music. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Funaki Fujiwara was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Sho Kazuki!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Funaki Fujiwara!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Skip Squint and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Fujiwara closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Fujiwara tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Fujiwara has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Kazuki is working hard here to advance position.

Fujiwara wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Kazuki, who protects the arm well.

Fujiwara looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Kazuki manages to work his way to half guard, despite Fujiwara's best efforts.
Kazuki makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Kazuki.

Fujiwara drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Kazuki manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Fujiwara has Kazuki in his guard.

Kazuki thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Kazuki drops back looking for a leg! Fujiwara is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Fujiwara manages to kick Kazuki off! Kazuki jumps back into Fujiwara's guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Kazuki lands a nice shot to the body.
Kazuki throws a one two combo.


It looks like Funaki Fujiwara has been cut.
Sho Kazuki is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Kazuki's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Kazuki duly obliges.
Fujiwara takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Fujiwara changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Kazuki tries to avoid it but Fujiwara manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Kazuki to the ground. Kazuki escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Fujiwara shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Kazuki pinned against the cage. Kazuki gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Kazuki throws a series of punches but Fujiwara avoids them all with ease.

Fujiwara postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Kazuki is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Fujiwara, into his guard.

Kazuki is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Fujiwara bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Kazuki's guard.

Fujiwara drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Fujiwara jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Kazuki had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Fujiwara is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Kazuki Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Fujiwara's back instead.

Kazuki is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Fujiwara defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
Fujiwara manages to reverse the position and now he's in Kazuki's guard. Nice work there by Fujiwara.

Kazuki working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Fujiwara doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Fujiwara manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Fujiwara looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Kazuki lands a jab-cross combination.
A jab-cross combination lands for Kazuki and sends Fujiwara crashing to the mat! Kazuki follows him down to the mat - Fujiwara regains half guard but he's not out of trouble yet!

Kazuki is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Fujiwara is just riding it out for now. Kazuki eventually gives up the hold.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Kazuki looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Fujiwara is controlling an arm, preventing Kazuki from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.

Kazuki swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Fujiwara is now in Kazuki's guard. A big mistake from Kazuki there, giving up the dominant position!

Fujiwara drops back, looking for a kneebar! Kazuki looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Kazuki looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Kazuki!

Fujiwara tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Kazuki wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Kazuki is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Fujiwara is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Fujiwara can't do much from the bottom here.
Kazuki is looking to take a break and control but Fujiwara is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Fujiwara is looking for a sweep.

Kazuki is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Fujiwara knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Fujiwara is staying active underneath Kazuki, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Kazuki is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Fujiwara has escaped the position, nice work there.

Fujiwara drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Fujiwara tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Kazuki tries to bench press Fujiwara off him but Fujiwara keeps the position.
Kazuki parries the strikes from Fujiwara easily there. Fujiwara is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Kazuki to escape.
Kazuki gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Fujiwara is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Fujiwara looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Kazuki with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Kazuki has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Fujiwara doesn't defend quickly enough and Kazuki has managed to lock this one up! Can Fujiwara escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Kazuki on a fantastic submission victory.
