PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jake Mendes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johnny Blaze (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Blaze has chosen Purple Haze as his entrance music. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the fighters buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jake Mendes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Johnny Blaze!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Alec Ball and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendes looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Blaze is fending him off so far but Mendes persists. Nope, Blaze circles away and we're back to standing.
Mendes shoots in for a takedown but Blaze shows good takedown defense.

Mendes drives through and clinches with Blaze against the cage.
Mendes is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

Mendes jumps guard and drags Blaze to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Blaze throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Mendes escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Blaze gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Mendes working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Blaze.
Mendes controls Blaze momentarily but Blaze frees himself.
Mendes has Blaze pulled in close to control his posture.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Blaze trying to control but Mendes is working from the bottom.
Blaze stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mendes swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Jake Mendes wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Mendes gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Blaze throws an elbow but it misses.
Blaze misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Mendes.

Blaze breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Blaze throws the kick towards the body but Mendes avoids it.
Blaze looks for a takedown but Mendes sprawls well.
Mendes moves out of range as Blaze strikes.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Blaze leaves Mendes with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jake Mendes. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mendes gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Blaze counters with a solid body kick.
Mendes shoots for a double leg takedown but Blaze sprawls well. He's pushed Mendes's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Jake Mendes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Thud! ouch! good body kick from Blaze - that will leave a mark!
Mendes swats away the attempt to clinch by Blaze.
Mendes throws a lazy head kick

and Blaze counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Mendes goes for a takedown in the clinch but Blaze prevents it.
Blaze creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Blaze's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Mendes presses Blaze against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.

Mendes takes an elbow to the temple.
Blaze is trying to drag Mendes to the mat but Mendes just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Mendes managing to block the knees to the body from Blaze.
Blaze looking to throw knees to the head but Mendes is blocking nicely.
Mendes is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Blaze is defending well.
Mendes avoiding damage as Blaze throws knees to the body.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by Mendes as Blaze tries to tie him up.
Blaze has Mendes pressed against the cage, preventing Mendes from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Blaze lands an elbow that stopped Mendes in his tracks for a moment.


It looks like Jake Mendes has been cut.
Mendes working hard to break the clinch.
Blaze letting Mendes take a breather here.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Blaze creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Mendes's defenses.
Blaze misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Mendes.
Blaze comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
The referee is keeping an eye on Mendes - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Mendes dodges an elbow strike from Blaze.
Mendes has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Mendes jumps guard but Blaze turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Blaze.
Mendes takes a knee to the side of the body.
Mendes takes an elbow to the temple.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Mendes jumps guard but Blaze stands there with Mendes around his waist. Mendes gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Blaze manages to break the clinch.
Mendes fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Johnny Blaze dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Jake Mendes's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Blaze doesn't manage to clinch there - Mendes circles away.
A nice leg kick lands there from Blaze.
Blaze throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Mendes throws the kick towards the body but Blaze avoids it.
Mendes looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Blaze tries to clinch up

and Mendes counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Blaze is looking for a sweep. Mendes is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Blaze trying to control but Mendes postures up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mendes frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Mendes throws some wild stikes that Blaze manages to avoid easily.
Blaze is trying to escape the mount.
Mendes connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Mendes tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Blaze is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Blaze is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Mendes throwing strikes here but Blaze is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Blaze really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Mendes controlling the pace for now.
Blaze really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mendes. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Mendes looking to secure an arm triangle but Blaze defends it well.

Blaze is trying to control the position here but Mendes swings around for an armbar and he's got it! This one is all over, courtesy of a slick submission by Mendes!
