And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jake Shields!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Akebono wants to clinch up but Shields keeps it at a distance.

Akebono bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Akebono avoids the strikes from the bottom by Shields.
Shields struggling a bit here.
Shields manages to get back to half guard.
Akebono is looking to take a break and control but Shields is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Akebono is looking for a sweep. Shields is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Shields looks up at the clock and then as Akebono takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Shields smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

That's time! Akebono's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Akebono forces Shields back against the cage and clinches.
Shields is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Akebono pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Shields changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Akebono fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Shields doesn't manage to clinch there - Akebono circles away.
Shields's jab looks to have found its range, popping Akebono under the eye.
Akebono throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Shields's waist but Shields gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Akebono off to one side.

Shields shoots in looking for a takedown but Akebono manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Shields's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Shields stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Akebono swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Shields is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Shields is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Shields wants to get back to his feet.
Akebono is trying to get back to full guard.

Akebono tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.

Akebono looking for submissions off his back.
Shields seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Akebono tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Shields has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Jake Shields will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Shields is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Akebono slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Jake Shields is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
