PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Luke Mcgulley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and RJ Howard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mcgulley's entrance music is System of a Down-Aerials . A fine choice. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Luke Mcgulley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, RJ Howard!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No luck for Howard with that takedown attempt.
Mcgulley shoots in looking for a takedown but Howard manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Mcgulley's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Sloppy strikes from Mcgulley. Those never looked like landing.
Mcgulley gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Howard counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Howard content to stall in guard here.
Mcgulley really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Howard wants to control from the top but Mcgulley keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by RJ Howard.
Mcgulley shoots in looking for a takedown. Howard tries to sprawl out of it but Mcgulley keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Howard manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Luke Mcgulley. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Howard shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Mcgulley as he avoids it easily.

and Howard counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Mcgulley!

Howard has control of Mcgulley's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Mcgulley regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Howard is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Mcgulley can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Still in half guard, Howard seems content to control.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. RJ Howard wasn't active enough on the ground.

Howard shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Mcgulley might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Howard is stalling here but it's allowed Mcgulley to get half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Howard in particular looking to stall.

Mcgulley changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Howard tries to avoid it but Mcgulley manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Howard to the ground. Howard escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Mcgulley changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Howard looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Howard tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Mcgulley wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Howard is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Mcgulley is controlling him well.

Mcgulley wants to lay and pray for a moment but Howard keeps working.
RJ Howard has got the better of the ground game so far.

You can see the frustration on Howard's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Mcgulley is looking to take a break and control but Howard is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

OK we're going to have a standup here. RJ Howard hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Mcgulley tries to bum rush Howard with a series of wild strikes but Howard uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Howard stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Howard wants it to stay on the feet.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Mcgulley shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Howard as he jumps to the side.

Howard wants to clinch up but Mcgulley keeps it at a distance.
Howard slaps away a takedown attempt from Mcgulley, before circling back to the center of the mat.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Mcgulley has an active guard here but Howard has managed to pass into half guard.

A close second round but RJ Howard will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Mcgulley moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Mcgulley won't allow Howard to get back to his feet.

Mcgulley fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Howard avoids it really well and circles away.

Mcgulley not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Howard wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

It looks like Mcgulley is going to stand back up.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Howard tries to get to full guard but Mcgulley has control of the leg.
